Nico Fleming makes his debut on the 2009 installment of Punch-Out for the Wii. He's the first opponent from the world circuit you must face.
His introduction montage shows him on a boxing academy wearing a hoodie, which he removes along with bandages from his left arm. He reveals a muscular body as he puts on boxing gloves. In title defense the bandage on his left arm is gone.
His moveset as contender consists mainly of delayed or regular hooks all hinted by a change of position (slightly raising his fists). In title defense he implements a taunt for Little Mac to punch him similarly to Don Flamenco along with a powerful left uppercut. Because there isn't a lot of variation or extravagant moves the difficulty lays on the faint audio tells he gives before punching. This might be a reference to his owl-like characterization
Trivia:
• Similarly to Von Kaiser, he seems to be a boxing teacher and hinted by his white hairs might too be surpassing the age limit imposed.
• He's the second boxer with an unknown age in the Punch-Out!!! Wii roster, after King Hippo.
• He's ranked on the world circuit despite his small fight record, probably due to him having more experience and a refined technique as a boxing teacher.
• He's the second Chilean boxer inspired by a national bird species (following Carol Cóndor)
• His design and name seem to be a reference to the owl species Asio Flammeus (commonly known as Nuco)
• The implementation of the left uppercut on title defense might be related to the hinted injury on his arm and it's possible recovery.
• Players attempting blindfold runs of the game have noted Nico as particularly difficult, his visual cues are easy to detect early but following only the faint sound cues becomes a challenge.
Doc Louis quotes:
"He's fast with his right, but the left's got a slower swing. Take advantage of his weak points before he can land a hit on you Mac baby"
"Look closely Mac, he still has moves from his teacher days that indicate when he's about to throw a punch. Time to show the teacher what the class has learned"
"He's smart like an owl, but you must outsmart him to win"
