In their most recent report, "Child Welfare in Indian Country: A Story of Painful Removals", NICWA calls attention to the disparity of Native children in the foster care system, "The Native family is three times more likely to have its child placed in foster care. If circumstances include substance abuse, the likelihood jumps to eight times. There seems to be no explanation but cultural bias."

These inequities are being recognized, but the question remains, what action is going to be taken. Please help us by signing our petition: lakotalaw.org/action . We would like to have 100,000 signatures by January 6th so that we can continue to appeal to the executive branch regarding these obvious inequities. The more signatures we have, the more weight our message carries!
The report goes on to conclude that, "In the long run, the well-being of the child and family is sacrificed. The underlying causes that lead Native children into the child welfare system--poverty, untreated trauma, and substance disorders--go untreated, and the long-term negative consequences of removal are rationalized."
In order to support a permanent healing process, "Child safety can best be realized when states and tribes work together, empowering each other to fulfill their roles." Unfortunately, the state of South Dakota has not be on board to facilitate any such healing process. This is why the funding for foster care services must go directly to the tribes, rather than being funneled through an uncooperative state!
