Nigel Planer & Rik Mayall The Young Ones
once in every lifetime
Finally sharing my Vyv art here!! There’s a couple more over on my insta, I just need to remember to post on all my platforms 😭🙏✨
The Rocky Horror Show, Playhouse Theatre, 5th July 2006
Found this in my drafts and I can't remember who posted the original format. I love you I'm sorry.
Forty some odd years ago a couple of British guys tried to make themselves as gross and repugnant as possible and tumblr fandom refuses to accept that and I think that is wonderful.
I went to see Nigel on his book tour today. A lovely show. He was asked at one point for his fondest memory of Rik and told a story I'd not heard before about a time he, Rik, and Peter Richardson were driving along some country lanes near Portsmouth and came across a crash. A man had flipped off his motorbike and landed down a hill. They could hear him crying out in pain.
Rik immediately ran down the hill to get to the man, whose legs were bent the wrong way, and started asking him questions - "What's your name? Do you have any sisters? What are their names?" - in a bid to keep him conscious. Peter, having grown up in rural parts, climbed the hill to signal cars for help. But despite Rik's frantic questioning, the guy was losing consciousness.
So, in a moment of desperation, Rik asks him, "Have you seen The Young Ones?"
The guy makes a confused noise that seems to signal he has. That's it. Rik transforms into Rick and goes, "Then do you think Cliff Richard is the greatest singer in the whole world!?" And he just keeps on like that, staying in character. Nigel joins in too as Neil and says to the man, "You think you have it tough, crashing off your motorbike? I'm the one who's just had to climb all the way down this hill." And so it went on.
The guy survived, his girlfriend later got in contact to tell them - and to thank them. They signed a poster. But imagine that: you're on death's door, in blinding agony, then out of nowhere two sitcom characters appear and start screaming at you to save your ruddy life! Surreal.
Nigel might tell this story (much better than I have) in his autobiography, but I've literally just got it so haven't read it yet. Still! Just thought I should share it with Tumblr anyway. ❤️
