Nighthand was resplendent in a thick dark blue jacket. Clothing him had been a difficulty—he was so broad at the shoulder and biceps that he had split the seams in three consecutive coats each time he flexed his arms.
"He erupts like a kraken out of all my clothes! Bah! I think, what am I supposed to do with a man like this?" the seamstress had said.
This is a description of a character in a children's book, last of a community called Berserkers, who feel no fear. He's a drunk and a pirate and a bit of an asshole until he finds his purpose, which is to protect the female protagonist, a TEN YEAR OLD CHILD. And then he bows before her and risks everything and anything to keep her safe on her quest.
There are some mature themes and elements in this book (pet death, murder, death of a main character) but it's still a book for kids. And yet the adult secondary male character is repeatedly depicted like a rake in a classic bodice ripper.
I do not understand why there isn't any fanfic about him on AO3. He even has a love interest in the book! An appropriate adult one!
