Tonight I watched a Hammer horror film I'd never heard of before: Nightmare, from 1964.

This was a blind watch for me. It popped up on my recommendations and I was intrigued. This is a slow-burn psychological thriller with icy black-and-white visuals. The plot initially centers around a troubled teenage girl who fears she will inherit her institutionalized mother's homicidal madness. She starts having vivid nightmares and seeing ghostly figures stalking her family's gothic estate-- but is it all in her mind or are there predators afoot?

The story proceeds to take an unusual turn by the midpoint. Imagine Diaboliques, Gaslight, and Psycho being thrown into a blender and that's a fair description of this strange little film. It's less than 90 minutes long and perfect for spooky season viewing.
