Em’s Nightmare (Part 4 of the Nightmare Project)
Em smiled. The robot she was building was going to be amazing. Not only was it more powerful than any she ever made before, but it could also run independently, allowing the robot to handle any heavy lifting, even if there was no one to operate it. She already picked out the perfect name for it: Lotus.
She smiled as Lotus powered up, only to frown as it pointed its blaster at her. "Lotus, stop!"
"Not good enough," Lotus said. "Not good enough Mysticon. Not good enough master." With that, the robot shot Em with the blaster, knocking her hard into the nearby wall.
"According to my database, you have released an anger plague throughout the city and allowed your friend to suffer with a life-drain spell," Lotus said as it pointed its blaster to Em again. "You are not good enough."
Em looked at the stairs. "Guys, help!"
"It's right, you know," Arkayna said. "You're not good enough."
Em turned back to the robot, its blaster pointed right at Em.
"Hey, wake up!" Em heard a voice say as she felt something nudge her shoulder. She woke up, and saw that she was in the stronghold's living room, laying on the couch. Zarya was there. She was vaguely aware of the book she was reading right beside her.
"I was grabbing some milk and saw you sleeping on the couch," Zarya said. "I wasn't gonna wake you, but it sounded like you were having a bad dream."
"Sorry," Em said.
Zarya sat on the couch. "Don't be sorry."
"But I'm messing up everything," Em said. "I promised to fix Hallite and Ferris' toy, but I can't seem to figure it out. I know we have books on technology here, so I was reading one, but must've dozed off."
"This isn't just about the toy, is it?" Zarya said. "You don't want to let your brothers down."
Em looked down. "It sometimes feels like I'm always messing up. I released a hate plague, got you infected with a life-drain spell, caused my mom to fall off the dragon train..."
"When did you-" Zarya began before shaking her head. "It doesn't matter. We all mess up sometimes."
"So you think I'm good enough to be a Mysticon?" Em said. "I mean, how can I help save the world if I can't fix a stupid toy?"
Zarya smiled. "Are you kidding? With all the inventions you built, all the advice you gave us, and the times your shield protected us, you're not sure if you're a good enough Mysticon?"
"Well, when you put it that way..." Em said.
"See? You are good enough," Zarya said. "Even if you can't figure out how to fix the toy, which I doubt."
"Thanks," Em said.
Zarya grabbed the book that Em had on the couch. "But figuring out how to fix the toy and realizing that you're worth isn't tied to one task will be a lot easier with some sleep. This can wait 'til morning.
"You're right," Em said.
