I saw your post about wanting to talk about Gortash and I just read your answer about how Enver was treated in the House of Hope and how he died and had to be revived.
So, I have an idea:
In those moments right after he's revived and Raphael is tormenting his tormentors for killing him, Gortash has a thought. For a small moment in time tinks he could forgive Rafael for everything just for that this catharsis. Then he realizes what he's thinking and it's a punch in the gut because *how could he think such a thing about someone he hates so much?*
(it's a bit messy but I hope you understand my vision)
NO YOU'RE SO RIGHT!! It's literally like, for a split second, he genuinely feels grateful to Raphael as if he hadn't done everything he did. For a split second he sees him as his savior. And isn't that just so disgusting? He feels ill just for having that thought, so deep in the abused mindset that he was willing to forgive his abuser. He'd literally hit himself as punishment to remember that no, no one will save him, no one will care for him, he's alone and hated by all.
Still, he can't help but thank the devil after all is said and done. And he also can't help the joy he feels as Raphael tells him not to be thankful, but to be stronger, as if his advice is something to be cherished.
I think some sort of Stockholm Syndrome was definitely in play for some time. That was what Raphael was trying to achieve anyway. There were times were his broken mind would slip up and excuse the abuse, forgive and be grateful. I think Gortash would hate himself for having those thoughts, more than he hates the tormentors who did this to him.
