On previous trips to Tokyo, I fell in love with the Toyota Crown taxis, especially those driven under the Nihon Kotsu livery brand. Meticulously maintained, always black, plenty of chrome, white doily-inspired seat covers and white gloved drivers who were more chauffeurs than taxi drivers, in the Western sense. And, built to last, even the mid-80's versions of the Crowns had the heft of '60's Detroit Iron.
I'm just back from a recent Tokyo visit, and when I couldn't flag down a Crown, or one wasn't next in the queue--I have to say, I was disappointed. My romanticized vision of the Crown was epitomized in the top photo. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught the image of this immaculately coiffed young woman, in the back of a Crown, headed somewhere special on a Saturday night. White gloved driver at the helm. Don't open or close the door behind you. It is considered rude to do so. The doors are automatic.
