22.
"That is the least of your concerns, worm." The supervillain growled as they strode through the fresh crater in the wall of their apartment. "After all this time, I finally found you, Shapesmith! I will make you suffer for tossing me in that prison, and you will beg for the cold release fo death when I'm done!" he spat, a thin layer of frost coating the criminal's hands as he balled his fists.
"Freezing Point?" Shapesmith replied, just recovering from being thrown from his couch. "I put you away years ago. How'd you get out of Stronghold?"
Freezing Point just laughed, a low and cruel cackle. "Doesn't matter. Now... any final words?"
"Yeah. If you think you'll win, you're delusional!" the Martian rebuffed, shooting out an enlarged fist at his adversary. In a flash, Freezing Point had raised his own arm and sent out a frigid blast, encasing Shapesmith and much of the room in thick, cold ice.
"Hahaha. Oh, I am enjoy this!" The villain sneered, reaching out to grab at the frozen stretched limb. "Did you know at temperatures below minus thirty degrees Celsius, Martian tissue tends to become a little, let's say," Freezing Point began to explain, tightening his grip on the ice and drawing a wince from Shapesmith, "brittle."
"Rus?"
The two looked over. Nikki stood in the hallway next to the living room, the sleepy tone in her voice betraying her exhaustion. She looked surprised at what was going on in front of her, but that expression soon shifted in one of determined anger at the intruder as she commanded "Let him go!"
Freezing Point scoffed at her demand. He turned back to his captive and said "Good, a witness. Say your goodbyes, Martian."
"You first."
"What? What do you think is going to happen here?" Freezing Point pressed, puzzled by Shapesmith's choice of reply. "You're done. Finished. Doomed. There's no hope of you surviving."
"Tell that to her."
Just then, a bolt of white-hot electricity arced through the air, startling the villain. The room darkened and filled with a dreadful purple glow, and a strong wind pitched up around them. Freezing Point stepped back in confusion. "What is this? What is..." he thought out loud, getting his answer when he turned around to discover the source of the anomalies.
Nikki was levitating, her feet hovering a good foot or so off the ground. Her hands were enveloped in an almost searing purple glow, and her eyes were glowing even brighter. Electricity rolled off her illuminated forearms, filling the air with the stench of burnt ozone. "I said... let. Him. GO!" She yelled, rearing both arms up before casting them both forward. The lightning surged forward in a massive bolt that struck Freezing Point dead centre in his torso, sending him flying back and crashing into the far wall of the living room. He slumped down, twitching and groaning in pain as stray bolts streaked off of him.
Nikki touched back down, the bright lights fading from her. Almost immediately, she rushed over to the still encased Shapesmith, desperately pressing glowing hands to the ice, water running between her fingers as it melted. “Are you okay?! Are you hurt?!” She rushed out, already looking Shapesmith for signs of injury.
“I- grr... I’m fine, Nikki.” Rus reassured the teen. Despite his words, he struggled to stand, the recent freezing taking a toll on his cells. “That was... good of you. Did Ian teach you that?”
Nikki hesitated. “Well, uh... not exactly? It’s a really long story.”
Shapesmith nodded. “Okay, it can wait. Well...”, he looked over at the unconscious supervillain in the corner, “maybe I was wrong about not letting you come on patrol with me. Especially if you can do that again!”
“Really?”
“Sure!”
