Most of my family or friends, Kanaka or not, have really ever been comfortable with someone who isn't Kanaka to take a Kanaka Maoli name. What are your thoughts on people who do take Hawaiian names but are either not Hawaiian or not Hawaiian and not from the islands?
I think if you’re not of Hawaiian descent then you should not have a Hawaiian name, UNLESS you have been raised in a kanaka maoli environment and understand and respect our history and culture. For example, Puakea Nogelmeier, he is not of Hawaiian descent but he was raised (and I mean that in the sense that he became educated and was nurtured and grew his ike, not in the sense that he was born and raised) in Hawaii, and he chose to live and continues to live his life in a way that helps our community. This doesn’t apply just for Hawaiian names, I also feel this way about Maori names, about Japanese, Chinese, any culture that isn’t yours and you don’t claim.
Can you post a selfie😏
I have a few on here. Just gotta look for them.
