Nine Moons by Gabriela Wiener, translated by Jessica Powell, is a bold, darkly humorous book about Wiener's pregnancy with her first child, about the anxieties and worries of pregnancy, about the pressures of natural birth discussions and judgment from others, about pregnancy's gross peculiarities, about motherhood. Wiener is sarcastic and honest about the months of a pregnancy and its simultaneous ugliness and beauty, its physicality.
The 2009 book is sex positive—the narrator writes about sex for a living. Though this is not in the main text of the book, which covers the nine months of pregnancy, Wiener is currently in a polyamorous triad with two children; the child she birthed, and wrote about in this book, is trans nonbinary. While the text has a few comments that read to me as trans exclusionary, Wiener seems to acknowledge in her afterword addressed to her child that her preoccupation with genders was ironic and is in the past. This was a quick, honest, open-minded read about pregnancy and its difficulties, and I enjoyed breezing through its pages.
@d_jerene has done a killer job of healing these high nostrils over the last two months and it's paid off so well! Thanks again 😊 All jewelry thanks to @bodyvisionlosangeles and Nine Moons Piercing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thank you! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Piercing by Tobias
