BARA I MORGON SÖNDAG!

Besides the two plot justifications of 'she got herself pregnant' and 'no way to turn on America's sweetheart' (as stated by other commenters), there's a 3rd thing happening with the theme of [GONE GIRL]. Nick doesn't want to leave her, and her trying to frame him for murder does save their marriage, just as she says -- not just by trapping him with those external justifications but by rekindling the flame between them and forcing him to finally respect her. As much as Nick is afraid of her, he's also attracted to her at the end, for the first time since years earlier, because he is kind of a manipulative narcissist himself and she's just outdone him. The whole adventure of her trying to frame him for murder is really more like her re-asserting herself in the relationship. She's achieving the respect and sense of self direction she's always felt cheated of, escaping from the subtle manipulation she's experienced with (her mother and) him. Tyler Perry even jokes at one point with something along the lines of 'you two deserve each other.' I can't remember the exact quote, but this is the gist of it -- he's picked up on how Nick isn't really out for what's 'right' or even his own safety, he's playing a game with her and feels frustrated because he's losing. I remember you can see Nick catching his meaning in that scene and it's a great beat where you see him trying to figure out how he should react to the 'joke' before the pace of the scene pulls him past the moment. His sister is an interesting barometer for this too, because although she also has a very odd relationship with Nick (sort of incestuous vibe going on there?), she has the most 'normal' reactions to his decisions (besides the detective, who is probably supposed to be an audience avatar), alternately crying or getting angry with him because she can't understand why he's making these seemingly insane, self-destructive choices. And in the end he manipulates her too, keeping her on his side through the whole thing, even while she clearly understands at some level that he is pretty fucked up. When you start looking at all the 'terrible' decisions he makes that lead to his eventual arrest, and how any of them could have been avoided with a little common sense, they appear stupid on the surface -- like lazy writing. But put them in a different context: imagine that he doesn't turn over the scavenger hunt letters to the detective because if he does, it won't be a game between him and her anymore, it will be taken over by the police and he'll have to watch from the sidelines. My favorite part of this theme though is the way Fincher depicts Nick/Amy's relationship in the flashbacks. They show a vacillating power balance (that largely favors him), with each subtly manipulating the other in small ways. It's nothing overt -- just little stuff that many couples probably do to each other, like lying about the powdered sugar kiss being unique. What's the big deal with that? A lot of these little lies and manipulations are things that many couples engage in -- and when some of them are scrutinized by the media after Amy's disappearance, the film examines how things that we all consider 'normal' or 'acceptable' in private are considered totally unacceptable in a context outside the unique, twisted shape of the private relationship where they occurred. It's Fincher's attack on hypocrisy, though he doesn't take it too far. I haven't read the book, so I don't know if this theme was part of the source material, but Fincher has that famous quote from a few years ago, stating that the core of his filmmaking is a belief that 'everyone is a pervert,' and we like having our perversions exposed. The movie isn't an exploration of one weird, twisted relationship, it's an exploration of every relationship, which Fincher happens to believe are all weird and twisted. TL:DR; He's turned on and impressed by her crazy sociopathic murder escapades, why would he want to leave? Edit: Whoops, that turned into a wall of text. Sorry about that. It's funny, I didn't actually like this movie very much -- I just think the underlying message is really interesting. The acting? Pacing? Stylistic execution? Yeah not so much. Edit 2: /u/craigtheman[1] just made an excellent point -- I attributed Nick's behavior to sociopathy but it's not at all, it's narcissism, which are depicted popularly with some similar behaviors but should not be conflated. Props to him for pointing this out, I completely agree.
