Coffee, Sandwiches, and Thoughts of Homicide

Everett's head was in his hands, grading papers was always the hardest part of teaching for him. How did two of his students manage to write “apiary” instead of “aviary”? If he wasn't at Starbucks, he would've banged his head against the table.

His coffee, an untouched vanilla latte with added whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce, was beginning to cool beside his laptop. As much as he needed to get through the last few students work, he was struggling to remain invested. Everett's mind was miles away.

He had someone in his mind. They had consumed his thoughts and free time so often lately, to the point of obsession. He could still see her so clearly, those long arms, slender fingers, the dimples on her face. The burning cigarette she tossed on the grass, that he had to extinguish instead.

Everett just couldn't stop thinking about them. He had found where they lived, their name, memorized their schedule, and his plan was coming together. Their security system would be disabled the night before. Three in the morning, that would be when he would pick them up, drive them to the woods, and tear them to pieces.

“Professor Byrd, I didn't expect to see you here!” A bubbly voice jolted him from his thoughts, and he spun around to see who was speaking to him.

Oh, them. One of the most enthusiastic students he had this semester. There was usually one or two every semester, and it always warmed his heart and made all the work and stress worth it.

“Well, I had to find a new place once Beanie's closed down, and I thought, 'why not try corporate coffee'?” Everett sipped his drink, his first taste. “Not quite as sweet as Beanie's, but it's not bad.”

They laughed, and pulled out a chair, sitting beside him. “You always seemed like the kinda guy who'd turn his nose up at anything that's not black coffee, never thought you'd like sweet drinks.”

He grimaced exaggeratedly, placing his cup back on the coaster. “Me? Oh, goodness no, I can't stand bitter coffee. Not a fan of the taste, and too much caffeine makes my heart race. This isn't much better, but it's an acceptable level.”

“Oh, same here! I just want something nice and sweet.”

Everett nodded, a mutual understanding. The two of them sat silently for a minute, neither really moving.

His student stood back up, pushing the chair in. “Sorry I can't stay much longer, I forgot I'm supposed to pick someone up. Uh, before I go, do you want a sandwich or something? My treat for my favorite professor.”

Professor Byrd pushed his glasses up his nose, blinked, and smiled at them, a genuine and kind smile. “I appreciate the gesture so much, but I-” He was interrupted by a low growl. His stomach. “Well, it has been a while since breakfast. I suppose I'll take you up on the kind offer, I'd love to try any of their sandwiches, surprise me.”

They nodded and quickly scooted away to join the rather short line. Such a good, kind student. He wondered how heartbroken they would be when their roommate was found, another 'drunk excursion to the forest gone wrong'. It almost felt wrong to cause them such emotional pain, but the damage their friend had almost caused to the environment vastly overshadowed it.

A sandwich was placed down in front of him. “Here you go, ham and cheese panini! Thanks for letting me kill some time with you, Mr. Byrd, I hope your work goes by quickly for you.” They gave him a quick little wave and left, completely oblivious to his plans.

Everett took a bite from the sandwich. Not bad. Pretty good even. Maybe he'd wait a few days before going through with it. A treat from their favorite professor.

Favorite Fruit: Idk I love lots of fruits! Mango and strawberries are my faves tho. Oh and watermelon!

Favorite Season: Swedish summer~ It’s generally mellow(?) and lovely

Favorite Animal: I love most animals but the animal that has always stood out to me is wolves. Pack animals that also keep their habitats healthy and thriving! I also really love elephants.

Coffee, Tea or Hot Chocolate: I’m gonna be THAT person and say ALL THREE! At least in fall/winter. But during the summer I crave iced coffee most so I guess I like it a TINY bit more. Peppermint tea is a close second tho.

Dogs or Cats?:  BOTHHHHHHHHH. I’m so soft for animals in general ok I love them. I even talk to the chickens that are kept behind our apartment complex every time I see them.

Favorite Fictional Character: Since I’ve been re-reading HP the first I thought of was Hermione! I also love Toph from ATLA~ And Midoriya in BNHA is my adoptive son ok he’s so precious! oh and i used to have a stupid crush on kakashi when i was in middle school lmao.

Dream Trip: China. I wanna visit the places I never had time for and see my dear friend.
