Layers, Masks and Selection in Adobe [Ps]

Today we learnt all about Layers, Masks, Selection Types and Tools and how to implicate them in creating good looking photoshop images.

We learnt how to create a bunch of different selections using different tools like the marquee, shaped marquee, lasso, polygon lasso, magnetic lasso, object selection, quick selection and magic wand, then using those selections to cut shapes out of images and edit them separately, using both masks and different layers.

We also learnt about how to patch up colours and shapes of selected images with certain selection tools as some of them aren’t perfect. This meant that when we were able to paste those images into other images they would look better. For example, in the bird picture, we used the object selection tool to cut it out, however it grabbed some of the background around the edges as well. To fix this issue and make it a more cohesive image when pasted, we would go around the edge and pick out darker colours on the bird, so that we could colour over the grey edge with a brush. Once fixed this made the image look a lot better.

I was quite confident with this lesson due to my existing skills in Photoshop that I have learnt through both Animation and previous education.

Shift + ⌘ + i = invert selection

⌘ + j = copy selection layer

Shift + ⌘ + j= cuts selection onto new layer

⌘ + d = drop selection

m = marquee

v = move

hold shift when selecting to add

hold option when selecting to remove

hold option when selecting to duplicate

option delete = fill layer with colour

Adams & Kobayashi

Ansel Adams was one of America’s most popular photographers because of his images from the Manzaner War Relocation Center in California of the Japanese Americans who were interned there during World War II. This image was taken of Tome Kobayashi while he stands in the south fields of the Manzanar Relocation Center, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in California’s Owens Valley in 1943 I found this image while scrolling through a bunch of Adams photos of the camps and this one just stuck me. Adams says, "The purpose of my work was to show how these people, suffering under a great injustice, and loss of property, businesses and professions, had overcome the sense of defeat and despair by building for themselves a vital community in an arid but magnificent environment." The photos that Adams took in California were allowed because of the friendship he had with the owner of the camp. The government did not want his photos being published with any sort of gun tower, barbed wire, or armed soldiers in the photos so Adams did his best to have some of those aspects in the far background of most of his images of the interned citizens. His photographs were taken in a mostly a positive light of the Japanese Americans, some with smiles on their faces, but that what his job was to do at first, because of the fearful country. Adam’s photos are very significant during this time period because of the way he chose to take his photos.

Paper has never looked so sweet

TreeFrog, a new company under Ricoh Canada has shared with the public the goal and mission to create tree-free paper.

The alternative to create paper instead of trees? Sugar cane.

“Sugar cane is a very innovative approach to paper production. Trees require something in the order of decades of growth before harvesting,” said David Armstrong, VP of Marketing for Ricoh Canada.

“Contrast that with the incredibly rapid growth of sugar cane, where you have as many as two harvests per year, and you can see what a compelling idea this really is.”

TreeFrog paper is sourced from a by-product of sugar cane production, so instead of burning the sugar cane or dropping the waste into a landfill, the sugar cane husk is converted into high quality paper.

The mission to start using sugar cane to create paper is also believed to be more financially beneficial, as well as environmentally friendly.
