Why I Love Wearing Perfume to Bed
I've come to a new stop on the self-care/Bougie Bitch train: perfume before bed.
It started about a year ago, when I got a bottle of Armani Sì Intense. It smelled so absolutely incredible that I wanted to smell like it on me all of the time—so that night, after my shower, I sprayed more on and inhaled my wrists. I woke up and the scent while long-gone from my skin, was still lingering on my pillowcase, and blankets—I inhaled the scent one more time, and rolled out of bed.
Since then, I've made it a point to bring a favorite scent to bed with me.
“What do I wear in bed? Why, Chanel No. 5, of course” ― Marilyn Monroe
After my ten-step beauty routine, and shower, I feel like a few light spritzes of a perfume that I love just tops off my whole nightly routine. And yes, I do have a boyfriend, but this isn't for him at all, I just love doing something small like this for myself, because it completely makes me feel nice. Not only is my mood enhanced, this practice makes me feel incredibly glamorous—as in, old-Hollywood, silk nightgown with a feather collar, bouncy pin-curls kind of glamourous. Glamorous, as in the Queen of Glam, Marilyn Monroe, famously proclaiming, “What do I wear in bed? Why, Chanel No. 5, of course”—if perfume was a staple in her nighttime routine, then you know it's worth having in yours.
So what kinds of fragrances do I like for bedtime? I'm a dark, moody kind of girl (surprise), anything too bright or upbeat and I won't feel relaxed enough to sleep. A few of my favorites are:
Elizabeth & James - Nirvana White and Nirvana Black: I've been a fan of this duo since they came out several years ago. Both scents separately smell beautiful, but the key is to actually layer them together for a seriously intoxicating combination of musk, floral, and vanilla.
Giorgio Armani - Sì Intense: This has a slightly more fruity finish from the blackcurrant, but it also has warm musk and vanilla notes that just blends so perfectly, it should be a crime. Any time I wear this I get compliments, in addition to the fact that I actually can't stop trying to smell myself.
Ralph Lauren - Tender Romance: This is the sweetest of the three, but equally as mesmerizing. It has notes of bergamont, ginger, musk, and jasmine, it smells really fresh and pretty but has just enough moodiness that it works great at night for bed.
The last thing I love about incorporating scents into my beauty routing is that now I don't have to wait for a special occasion to wear my fragrances, every night can feel a little more special, and I can actually enjoy my perfume collection rather than letting it collect dust.
Anyway, it's such a small, simple thing that really just makes me feel so incredible at night. Do any of you wear fragrances to bed? If so, which ones?
Getting Ready for the CFDA Awards with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
Mark Townsend got the sisters ready at Ashley's New York City apartment, and snapped exclusive pics for us along the way. By Hannah Morrill (Harper's Bazaar, June 2014)
Starting from the top row and going down, left to right on each row: 📸 I: “The girls always argue about who gets to do makeup first, because they like to let their hair air-dry. Last night, Mary-Kate won, and Ashley ended up going first. This is Mary-Kate with makeup artist Ana Marie.” 📸 II: “I blew out Ashley’s hair with a few drops of Dove Dry Oil and a mixed bristle Spornette brush, which is the only kind of brush I ever use with them. The white bristles pick the hair up from the root and push it into the shorter natural bristles, so you get volume and that really smooth finish.” 📸 III: “I know this is a weird picture, but if you look closely, you’ll see tiny bits of hair on the floor. I hadn’t given Ashley a real haircut in over a year, so I took off about an eighth of an inch. It’s what I call a ‘dusting.’” 📸 IV: “Ashley was feeling a little under the weather, so she was having matzo ball soup during her blowout. When I was done, I swirled it into this set with a duckbill clip and moved on to Mary-Kate.” 📸 V: “When I got to Mary-Kate, her hair was a little damp but mostly dry. And I had this leftover piece of black velvet ribbon from Ashley’s hair at the Met Ball. We knew the hair needed to go up because of the gorgeous Sidney Garber earrings she’d be wearing. I crisscrossed her ponytail with the ribbon, and pinned it up into this bun.” 📸 VI: “The girls are very visual, so I always take detail shots with my phone to show them rather than forcing them to see in a mirror. The first time I did the ribbon, Mary-Kate and I agreed it was too perfect. The third time was the charm. She also has a five hair pins rule—and I stuck to it!” 📸 VII: “Even though I’d given Ashley the most gorgeous blowout, I knew her hair needed to go up, too, since she was also wearing insane Sidney Garber earrings. This is my ‘Oh crap, I need to hurry’ face.” 📸 VIII: “I decided to braid Ashley’s long hair and then twist it up into a low bun. She loves hair that looks like it’s falling out, so I ended up using about 27 hair pins to get it right.” 📸 IX: “Here’s Ashley’s finished look. We never like things to be too symmetrical or perfect or smooth. That’s the girls’ whole aesthetic, in the clothes they design, and the style they’re drawn to.” 📸 X: “It was a Nirvana White kind of night. Here’s Ashley’s rollerball right from her purse—the last touch before she walked out the door.” Elizabeth and James Nirvana White Rollerball, $22, sephora.com.
