Wanted to draw a lil sketch out in full buttt not to colour it, so I decided to play around with some shading instead. These bird like creatures are called Navai (plural, sing is Navah), and are considered sacred by the nui. They usually follow a cycle and therefore disappear for lenghts of time during the blessed season and tend to be elusive, especially upon their return, but they do form bonds with humans occasionally, who then become tasked to protect them.
It is a great honour, and a human with a navai companion is called an Alie. These animals are very intelligent and perceptive, and they're raised to deliver messages and warn people of upcoming storms, which can be quite destructive in Nui.
This drawing specifically is of Nirviela, one of the priests of the 9 temples, a very important and influential figure, especially in Fairlight's life, acting as a parent towards them. Their navah is named Soua and is later passed down in Fairlight's care.
