Thanks to Nisha Raghavan for the original article, here the author talks about some habits that might be holding you back in your career.
KEY POINTS
PLEASING EVERYONE - Don't be that person who says YES to everything. Learn how and when to say NO. Don't overpromise and underdeliver. Everytime you take on a task, and cannot complete it - your reputation is tarnished. Instead build the reputation of being the guy/gal who gets things done.
DOING IT ALL BY YOURSELF- Learning how to prioritize your tasks is a key skill. We all have spent time doing tasks that do not yield the highest return on the energy spent. Be smart and cautious with the time you spend
NOT PROMOTING YOUR WORK - Humility isn't always the best thing. If your management or superiors do not know about your accomplishments - then nothing happens. It is OK to blow your horns once in a while, this is a way to get noticed.
ASK FOR HELP - Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, it shows strength as a team player. People are more than willing to help you accomplish the tasks. And most importantly, reciprocate their help. Ask them and help them with their tasks.
WORKING INDEPENDENTLY - It is OK to be dependent on your manager or peers initially when you are starting out. However, even after 3 years you are still asking for help - then it is not a good sign. Take ownership and responsibility for your actions.
