Stellar OM Source – Sudden

Christelle Gualdi has a background in France’s formal academic music scene, but she lets loose under the new-agey, acid-techno stylings of Stellar OM Source. Although her synthetic, Detroit-inspired sound is composed with hardware in real time, Gualdi seems to transcend her human limits with pieces that operate on a higher level of consciousness, creating something that is as spiritual as it is cerebral.

She’s back with a new EP, Nite-Glo, and its first single “Sudden” maintains those abstract, forward-thinking notions. This time, however, Gualdi enters her mobile studio affected by personal loss and the stinging self-awareness and emotions it brings along. Nite-Glo reflects this with a toned-down, meditative energy that muffles the freneticism established on her 2013 full-length, Joy One Mile.

Gualdi’s new release is “visible only as eyes have adjusted in the shadows,” but there’s more to “Sudden” than the mournful introspection that informs it. Living up to its name, angular elements fade in and out of the picture unexpectedly, leaving the rhythmic orbit spun into motion by Gualdi without a moment’s notice. It’s a wild, boundless techno track, a thrillingly sentient extension of her creative energy.

Nite-Glo is out June 9 in the States via RVNG Intl.
