Work Description: I'm offering a pair of knitted socks or gloves with a colour pattern designed especially for your wishes. They will be made with sock yarn (75% wool, 25% polyamide, machine washable). For gloves, if the auction goes above $100, I'm willing to line them with a very soft baby yarn for extra warmth and it just feels so nice. Depending on how complex the pattern will be, this will take a few months to finish. I'm happy to talk about ideas with you and figure something out together. These socks/gloves are meant to be worn, so I'll need you to meassure your hands/feet for me (in cm). (If you want socks/gloves for kids, I'm happy to do that, too.) Please note that you'll be paying for shipping and I'm in Germany. I'm willing to do most ships, but please ask before requesting a villain or a character who appears only in the comics or in MCU content after 2016-ish if they aren't listed.

Work Description: I'm offering one pair of knitted socks inspired by the fandom or character you choose. It can be the same design for both socks or a different one for each (for example one Bucky sock and one Steve sock for a pair of Stucky socks). Examples of my socks can be found on my tumblr blog (farbschatten). I use sock wool (75% wool, 25% polyamide) that is machine washable up to 40C. Knitting socks with a pattern takes a lot of time, but I'll get started working on a pattern right away and I'm happy to discuss ideas with you. Monument Le Mort Homme

The scene of ferocious fighting during the Battle of Verdun, Le Mort Homme (The Dead Man, named before the Great War began curiously enough) lost 35 feet in overall height due to the amount of artillery fire that took place between the French and Germans. The ground still bears the pockmarked evidence of the shell explosions despite being covered by Austrian pine trees that were planted in the 1930’s (strong enough to withstand the toxic soil, poisoned by the remains of battle). The Germans took this hill in May of 1916 and, despite constant fighting, it was not taken back by the French until August 1917.

There are two prominent memorials at the top of the hill. The smaller of the two, an obelisk with an engraved sword to commemorate the French 40th Division. The other, a large skeleton holding the French flag and a torch, a commemoration of the French 69th Division. “ILS NONT PAS PASSE” (They Did Not Pass), in reference to French General Robert Nivelle’s inspiring June 23 1916 order of the day (Ils ne passeront pas!), is inscribed on the base of the monument. Author J.R.R. Tolkien, serving at the Somme in July of 1916, may have been aware of Nivelle’s order and, along with other experiences from the Great War, might have used this bit history when writing Gandalf’s equally inspiring words in his 1954 Lord of the Rings – Fellowship of the Ring:

You cannot pass," he said. The orcs stood still, and a dead silence fell. "I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass.

It was a snowy, foggy and icy drive to get to this place. It was very quiet, I was the only one stupid enough to be at the top of this hill on such a miserable day, but the weather seemed appropriate for the location. It would have been interesting to explore the woods a bit, but there was no path and who knows what unexploded munitions are still in the ground up there.

Nivelle Out; Pétain In

May 15 1917, Paris--The Nivelle Offensive had been a complete failure.  Called off officially on May 9, it had taken portions of the Chemin des Dames for well over 130,000 casualties.  In fact, the German lines were shorter than they had been before the offensive, due to the elimination of a salient along the Aisne.  He had lost the confidence of his fellow generals, and, increasingly his own men.  Some of his final supporters were the British, who he was on good terms with as a fluent English speaker---and also likely because Nivelle had argued that the French should take the harder task in the fighting this year.

On May 11, the French government decided to replace Nivelle with Pétain, who had been Chief of Staff since late April as a check on Nivelle.  They hoped Nivelle would go willingly, but he refused and had to be sacked on May 15.  Replacing Pétain as Chief of Staff was Ferdinand Foch, re-emerging from effective exile serving as military coordinator with Italy and (in secret) Switzerland for the past five months.  Pétain needed to rebuild the army after Nivelle's misadventure, not just from the casualties it received but also from the immense blow to morale and cohesion it received.  Even with the offensive over, the mutinies continued and in fact grew worse.

French Capture Eastern End of Chemin Des Dames

May 5 1917, Craonne--The German positions on the Aisne were centered around the Chemin des Dames, “the ladies’ path,” (originally named for two daughters of Louis XV) running along a ridge overlooking the river.  These heights were supposed to have been taken on the first day of the Nivelle Offensive, but nearly three weeks later it was still mostly in German hands.  Local attacks continued to maintain the French tactical position, but Nivelle still hoped that another major push could take the heights and push beyond.

This attack, originally scheduled for April 23, was repeatedly pushed back due to logistical confusion.  The French supply arrangements had assumed they would not still be fighting a major battle here three weeks after the initial offensive.  The large numbers of wounded overwhelmed the French hospitals, leaving casualties stranded near the front lines for days.  The mutinies among French troops were not yet widespread enough to affect Nivelle’s timetable, though they were a growing concern.

Finally, on May 5, the French attacked, and took the ridge and the eastern portions of the Chemin des Dames.  They were supported by 48 new Saint Chamond tanks, French heavy tanks armed with a machine gun and a 75 mm gun.  These tanks were highly unwieldy: it was very hard to navigate them over obstacles, and aiming the 75 mm gun required turning the whole tank.  Nevertheless, they proved relatively effective; only six were lost during the day, though many may have gotten stuck.  The French captured 6000 PoWs, but any further progress beyond the Chemin des Dames was quickly halted by German counterattacks.

Further French Attacks as Mutinies Begin

April 17 1917, Moronvilliers--Nivelle’s great offensive, had, by nightfall on the 16th, failed to capture the objectives that had been slated for 9AM.  Nivelle had promised that if the offensive did not work, it could be quickly called off with minimal casualties, unlike last year’s months-long bloodbath on the Somme.  However, it could not be so quickly called off, for a variety of reasons.  Foremost was the political one; Nivelle (now with his career on the line) was convinced it would still work, and continued to order attacks on yesterday’s targets--although they were (at least for the time being) more limited in scope, focused on the Chemin des Dames.  On a tactical level, the defense and securing of the few positions taken yesterday did require additional attacks to shore them up.

Despite the failures along the Aisne, a major supporting attack scheduled for the 17th went forward anyway.  In Champagne, the Fourth Army attacked in the hills around Moronvilliers, east of Rheims. As along the Aisne, they managed to take the first German line but failed to progress further; fighting would continue here for more than a month, but the French would advance no more than two miles.

It was clear to many observers that Nivelle’s days were numbered. Though hardly an impartial observer (having been sidelined concurrently with Nivelle’s rise), General Foch accurately predicted, in a conversation with British General Wilson that Nivelle would soon be sacked in favor of Pétain, “who will play a waiting game until the USA come...say a year hence.”

The infantrymen, who had had such confidence in Nivelle before the offensive, sensed this as well.  In an incident that would become the first of many, seventeen men simply abandoned their posts rather than participate in another failed attack along the Aisne.  This was to be the first of the “French Mutinies,” in which French soldiers refused to participate in attacks.  Despite the name, the incidents were rarely violent--far closer to strikes than mutinies.

British Resume Attacks At Arras

The Germans bombard British positions on April 24, the second day of fighting.  In the foreground is a British dressing station for wounded troops.

April 23 1917, Arras--After their initial successes, the British attack at Arras ended within a few days; they had suffered heavy casualties and had run up against the strongly-defended and increasingly-reinforced German rear positions.  Furthermore, the goals of the offensive had largely been achieved; important tactical gains had been secured and the Germans had been diverted from the French attack on the Aisne.  However, it soon became clear that the French offensive was failing, and Nivelle wanted a resumption of the attacks at Arras to relieve pressure along the Aisne.  The British, who had been considering further attacks for tactical objectives, agreed.

On April 23, the British attacked again near Arras; the Canadians at Vimy were (for now) not involved.  The British were largely successful, at first.  However, the Germans had learned their lessons from the prior weeks’ battles (and had changed commanders), and were ready to counterattack that evening, driving the British back in many places.  The British did retain many of their gains, but at high cost; there would be no repeat of their victory of two weeks prior.
