Catalina Island 2017. #springbreakweekend #nixadventures (at Catalina Island)
#day115 #nix366project #inapaarmansgarden - a beautiful afternoon in a beautiful place. #soulfood #nixadventures
Here’s my pretty raccoon lady! She’s still got some goobers on her snoot, she isn’t quite done in the soak yet. The teeth on her bottom jaw are turning a little grey for some reason, my guess is that the rot water is pooling inside of them. I put her jaw back in upside down this time, hopefully that will help~
I just gotta say, old abandoned barns are the best place to look for bones ever.
in just an hour or two, we found
bits and pieces from at least 3 goats (one almost complete skull+jaw, and some various mandibles)
Two whole opossum skulls, possibly some more opossum bits too
A raccoon skull and jaw, as well as probably some more bits
lots of chicken bits, and the top bit of a chicken’s skull
a cat’s paw bones, one with a claw still on it.
There was a whole lot more that we probably could have found if it hadn’t been so cold. We’re going back there in the summertime, it’s really fun. I’m working on the raccoon, goat skull, and one of the opossum skulls atm. I’m not doing them all at once just because of lack of space, and because I want to focus on just a few at a time. The goat is a male, and we even found one of his horn sheaths. He is missing the front half of his mandible, I think something gnawed his teeth off. He has thick black fleck things stuck to his teeth, i’m not sure what it’s made out of but so far it’s a pain to get rid of.
I’m pretty sure that the raccoon is a lady, and that the opossum is a young man, probably like 1-2 years old. The possum is the least rotted down out of all of them, though he’s still mostly bone. When I found him he had a bunch of fishing line(?) around his neck, I think he might have stuck his head into a trash can that he shouldn’t have. I don’t know much about the raccoon, but the teeth on her bottom jaw are turning grey for some reason. I’m still pretty new at all of this, so if you have any advice feel free to message me or something! I’m going to post pictures of everybody soon.
