Revisiting the idea Joo Jaekyung is a very sad boy

Episode 72 was a gift. Now let’s get into it.

My powers of bl wizardry struck again! Jaekyung’s childhood home definitely shares shades of similarity with Kim Dan’s og house. Also some extra fun bits of information that on reflection I think were foreshadowed was Jaekyung’s relationship with alcohol - in particular the fact he has no tolerance and a clear disdain for it after discovering his father was a junkie alcoholic. Pouring the alcohol all over Kim Dan’s head kinda seems less like a dick move and more like an emotional response now.

Also this woman:

She’s giving Kim Dan’s granny vibes. I totally see why Jaekyung is obsessed with her now. It’s not mind games - he genuinely has affection for the elderly because old people looked after him when he needed them.

Even the director - even though he’s not that old - he’s definitely significantly older than the traditional age you’d expect a 6 year old’s parents to be.

I mean -

Nailed that one. But also affection to him seems to be tied to getting stronger. He wants his mum to come back and he’s working towards that goal. Obviously she never does come back and I’m guessing the next episode will get into that. I feel like the trope at play here is that Kim Dan will come back and in doing so will unpick that bit of trauma.

Episode 72 definitely reinforced this by how seriously Jaekyung takes his training and his motivations. What’s interesting to me at this point in time is how the jinx came into play.

My prediction is that he fooled around with a fellow club member before his first win and that cemented the idea of the jinx to him. Unpacking that might in fact be the thing that allows him to heal.

What’s intriguing as well with the way the narrative is being spun is that the ball has gone back into Kim Dan’s court. He’s learning good shit about Jaekyung here that he’ll be able to use to further win over Jaekyung. He’s learning so much about his feelings towards affection and relationships in general. Plus it also helps that Jaekyung is currently crying in the car because much like the grinch his heart has grown 2 sizes since leaving the city.
