Most people knew better than to walk through the woods alone at night, and Phoenix Castillo was not an exception. In fact, she knew better than most humans how dangerous the woods could be; she knew that the supernatural lurked out there. However, she still frequently would walk through the woods around Edgewood, confidently though cautiously. Anyways, it was only about 6:30 pm and only entering dusk.
Phoenix was humming to herself in the woods south of town and picking her way through the trees. She didn’t really have a destination in mind today, though she thought that the gnome den she and her twin Griffin found five years earlier was nearby. Walking alone in the woods was always nice so that she didn’t have to keep her mental shields up, though it was always more fun with her twin.
She noticed someone through the trees standing a couple dozen yards away and stopped in her tracks, wondering what they were doing. She reached out with her powers to try and read their mind, but they were out of reach. Phoenix decided to try and test the range of her telepathy by sneaking up on the person until she was close enough to get a read. However, before she got in range, she stepped on a twig which made a loud crack. Startled, she yelped and jumped slightly. There goes that plan, she thought.
