Saparmurat Atayevich Niyazov
Saparmurat Niyazov was the president-for-life of the Republic of Turkmenistan, a country formerly part of the Soviet Union. Elected in 1990, he was the first and only president of the country.
Niyazov was also batshit crazy. He built an immense gold statue of himself that rotates over the course of 24 hours so as to always face the sun. He introduced a new alphabet, renamed all the days of the week and months (mostly after himself and his family), banned lip syncing at concerts, long hair and beards on men. News reporters weren’t allowed to wear makeup, and gold teeth outlawed and he renamed the Turkmen word for bread after his mother.
He died from heart failure in December 2006.
