I’ve always found these Destruction tours somewhat arduous. Mainly because they almost entirely consist of G1 rematches in which whoever lost in the tournament can get their win back on the Destruction shows, so I never really feel too enthusiastic about them. This was generally the case here, with one notable exception. This coupled with the fact that there isn’t too much on the horizon until Wrestle Kingdom that I feel too excited about at present, though these shows did feature some gems. Here’s a brief run-through of some of the highlights:

The Beppu card on the 15th was literally “just a show”. Nothing but the top two matches were worth watching, and whilst delivering, even they had their issues. GOD defeated Ishii and YOSHI-HASHI in a very good match after KENTA distracted YH. and Tonga got the school boy pin at 21:31. Even though good, this was much too long, the finish sucked, and featured the bizarre notion that the heels would get the heat on Ishii (!), who would make the hot tag to YOSHI (!!!), who “ran wild” on the heels. Look, having jabs at YOSHI-HASHI is like shooting fish in a barrell, and to make matters worse, he regressed considerably since returning in January. He was never the smoothest of workers, but now he’s even worse, and sticks out like a sore thumb on this roster, especially seeing as how he’s placed. And it looks like he is KENTA’s next NEVER challenger, which is just the last thing KENTA needs. ZSJ regained the British title that he’d dropped a mere two weeks earlier, when he pinned Tanahashi with a grounded Cobra Twist at the 26:43 mark of yet another excellent battle between the two. This was maybe their 43rd match this year together, so to say it wasn’t too much of an appealing prospect would be an understament, but it ended up being one of their best outings together, in my opinion. It told a great story in that Tana has only ever beaten Zack via cradle, so tried to get the submission win all match, even hiting an HFF to the back, but refusing to cover, instead locking in a Cloverleaf,. This was ultimately his undoing, as Zack, who’s always submitted Tanahashi, won the belt back with a cradle. This was lots of fun, but I honestly don’t see what the point of it all was.

The Kagoshima show the next night was much better. It featured a great brawl between Liger and Suzuki, in which Suzuki ripped off the legends mask. This would play into another great angle in Kobe. ELP and Ishimori tetained the Jr tag straps in an exceptional high-flying doubles clash against The Birds Of Prey, when Phantasmo pinned Eagles with the CRII at 23:10, to avenge their Royal Quest loss. This was a fantastic contest, easily one of the best tag matches all year, that saw some spectacular highspots. Phantasmo is challenging Ospreay in Kokugikan on October 14th for the Junior Title, so that is probably going to be tremendous as well. And in the main event, hometown boy Kota Ibushi overcame the nefarious tactics of the evil KENTA, to keep hold of the G1 briefcase. This was a very devisive match (some hated it, though I’ve no idea why), which told a very compelling story in that the babyface had to overcome the cheating heel in his hometown. KENTA attacked Ibushi before the bell and destroyed the briefcase, demanding they make him a Bullet Club one. He dominated most of the match, working over the ankle Ibushi injured in their G1 outing, and Ibushi did an amazing job as the babyface in peril. The finish came fter GOD ran in, Ishii and YOSHI-HASHI sent them packing, KENTA got a near fall when he nailed Kota with his own Kamigoye. Ibushi battled back hitting a V-Trigger, then nailed his Kamigoye for a great near fall, then another to keep the Dome rights at 26:23. EVIL came out in the post match and challenged Ibushi for the briefcase, which was accepted.

The final, and biggest, show of the tour in Kobe saw a wild angle in which Liger attacked Suzuki as he was making his entrance for their multi man tag. They had a crazy brawl, before Suzuki nailed Liger with a hard chair shot, which prompted Liger to remove his mask to reveal Kishin Liger, his evil alter ego. He misted Suzuki, and referee Marty Asami, then tried to stab Suzuki with a ring spike, but Suzuki fled. Liger chased after him, laying out the Young Lions and his own team mates as he went. This was great and given its Liger’s retirement tour, he got a chance to do the Kishin Liger gimmick one last time in Kobe, the place he debuted it in 1996 in his memorable match with The Great Muta. Hirooki Goto defeated Shingo Takagi in what was, for my money, the best match of the whole tour. I loved their G1 match at Budokan, and this was every bit as good. This was a hard-hitting war in which they pounded each other for 20:27 in glorious fashion with some super stiff lariats. It also featured some tremendous sequences, before Goto got his win back (of course he did) when he put The Last Dragon away with the GTR. 

And in the main event, Tetsuya Naito very surprisingly didn’t avenge his G1 loss, as he dropped the I.C. Title in his first defense to Jay White in an excellent 29:47 contest. The first half of this wasn’t anything too exciting, but the second half was really great. Naito took some serious punishment here, with both hitting each other really hard at points. The finsih saw a crazy creative counter exchange, in which every big move Naito tried, White would counter out of and try Blade Runner. Jay tried an attempt at Blade Runner, but Naito escaped. Switchblade hit a series of devastating Sleeper Suplexes, and Naito reverses into a Dragon Suplex, went for Destino, Jay countered, but Naito powered through and hit Destino for a near fall. After another great counter exchange, White finally turned a Valentia into a Blade Runner and won the belt to suck the air out of the room. I had hoped White would win here, as I see more legs in him being I.C. Champion than Naito, who’s at the Nakamura stage where he’s had the belt so many times at this point, it essentially means nothing. White mocked Naito and LIJ in the post match, but Hirooki Goto ran down and laid him out with a forearm, setting himself up to be the first challenger to the new champion, so his win over Shingo wasn’t as arbitrary as first thought.
