DJ Hairy Larry Presents NJHB Playing Colossus

From The Archives Of Something Blue March 19, 2023
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear a song I wrote that NJHB played at my Senior Recital.
The Senior Recital is a rite of passage for music students, the most important recital in their undergraduate studies. My recital was on November 8, 2013, and I had been playing all year with NJHB, the New Jazz House Band. It only made sense to me to bring this rehearsed act to the Fine Arts Recital Hall to close the recital with 4 of my original compositions.
My song, "Colossus", was one of our favorites and we kicked off the NJHB set with it.
This recording of Colossus featured Arkansas musicians, Suzanne Michell - vocals, Addison Boling - drums, Matt Jackson - bass, Jay Shepherd - guitar, Don Bowyer - trombone, Joseph Curtis - trumpet, Cody Ballard - tenor sax, and Hairy Larry - piano and vocals.

Thanks Marty, today we’re hearing some Neo Soul recorded at the Jonesboro Public Library.
New Jazz In Jonesboro moved to the Round Room where we played three seasons in 2018 and 2019. Our first show at the library was on September 1, 2018. NJHB plays all original songs and Joseph Curtis brought in a great new chart called “Neo Soul Jam #1”.
Thanks Marty, today we'll hear one of my original compositions played at The Round Room in the Jonesboro Public Library.
New Jazz In Jonesboro had a successful season at The Arts@311 in 2013. Then in 2018 I restarted the program at The Round Room and thanks to Mark Smith we got KASU on board helping with publicity.
On November 10, 2018, NJHB, the New Jazz House Band, played four of my original compositions, three of them being played for the first time in public. Because that's how NJHB rolls. We just put a brand new chart up on the music stands and then we improvise the whole arrangement, not just the solos.
The last piece of the evening was "Artificial Gravity" and playing on the song in solo order are Cody Ballard - tenor, Jon Vickers - alto, Gabe Waters - bass clarinet, Tyler Remagen - tenor, Hairy Larry - piano, Spencer Rawlins - bass, and Alex Washam - drums, all ASU Jazz Students and alumni.

NJHB - Stinger
The new NJHB CD, “Stinger”, featuring Chris “Stinger” Stevens on guitar is done and it sounds great. I have a beautiful cover thanks to Noel Badges Hughes. I will upload everything to archive.org tomorrow and post a link, the art, and a player.
It took 2 1/2 years to complete this project but I had to do it because of the amazing guitar that Chris and Mike “Zif” Lovell played the night we recorded it. Thanks to Corey Emerson and Cody Ballard for helping me complete this work with their bass and sax overdubs. Also playing on the CD is Carl Abraham on drums and I’ve got piano and harmonica.
