So I removed the landing. As you can see the whole in the floor shows where the post originally was installed. You can now see the stringer exposed where the original first step and the post was and the notch. When the landing was built the post was also cut at the bottom. Atleast half of the base of the post was cut off and was installed on top of the landing and notched into the second step. Got some rough sanding done . The messiest part of the job but I get to see the deal under the old paint and stain. This post and railing are in really bad shape. Railing is so loose that all the joint are cracked . The post has been modified and cut at the base in a way that it basically ruined it and cant be installed the way it was installed originally because the first step was removed and a landing was built. So Im gonna kidnap the post and try to work some magic on it . We dont want to replace the post . Its all about restoration.
