While still an art school student in Cuba, Belkis Ayón decided to devote her artwork exclusively to the topic of Abakuá - a secret male Afro-Cuban fraternal and religious society. Abakuá, which originated in Nigeria and Cameroon, was transferred to Haiti and Cuba. The group's mythology is largely focused on forest spirits and animals (members were thought to be able to transform themselves into leopards at will).
