tmc volume 6 is so so sad to me because like. adam had FRIENDS. he had a whole group of people who liked him enough to drive to another county to meet him after years of no-contact. to trust what he said and come to a sketchy house in the middle of nowhere. people who were concerned for his safety and wanted to help him. which tells us

even with people who knew him well and apparently put up with his cryptic bs + him just disappearing for extended periods of time, he still didnt feel like he could trust them with his personal history. the choice wasnt made out of desperation; he would genuinely rather trust some random stranger from the internet to make sure he doesnt die than them (which is sad but seeing how amanda treats julie i can also sort of see why)

adam was probably mia friend #1... the way noah dropped everything to try to help him and didnt blink an eye at the possibility their friend was staying in a wrecked house alone, how they barely seem to acknowledge how weird any of the actions he's taking are, means that theyre completely used to it. which is an unsurprising character choice but the fact that he was apparently charming enough in the past for all of them to overlook this so easily is interesting

jonah was SO ALONE. i feel like knowing your friend has closer friends than you would be excruciating, and the terms of their arrangement means he wouldve been deeply aware that he's the 'second choice'. at this point in the story he is literally just some hired guy. everyone we're introduced to so far we know through adam; what kind of connections did jonah even have? sarah? you can barely call it that bc she was concerned for him and his dying more out of human decency than any personal feelings...

and yet it's obvious that jonah and adam both got attached and felt dependent on each other in some way, what with the amount of personal stuff adam's shared with jonah, and the way jonah seems to feel responsible for adam as if it's his job to protect him. vice versa for adam to jonah judging by the crushing guilt he feels over jonah's death. i hope he gets to haunt the narrative

(also i like the little implication that adam was a standoffish absent sometimes cold friend and yet he had so many people who cared for him meanwhile jonah is playful, chatty, extroverted, wears his heart on his sleeve, and still has nobody to love him back </3)

I feel like introducing this new group is probably a net good for the state of the show (ties the plot back down to a bunch of teens as it was originally planned to, establishes adam's continuing role in the story, connects evelin and mayyybe sarah? rip joner tho ur always in my heart). noah being a foil to jonah will be pretty cool to dig into— i don't think he actually died tbh— and i like the seer-like role julie is taking, plus setting up a conflict between her and amanda (noah saying that it's 'her job to gaslight her' got me raising an eyebrow bc it implies a lot abt their relationship)

anyway. not my fave ep when vol 2 exists but does a lot of heavy lifting & setup for the plot. cautiously hopeful

rewatched the entirety of tmc tonight here's some doodles

My favourite idea is that Adam doesnt want to confront the fact that he loves his friends so he acts like he doesnt. He misses evelin, he misses jonah, he wants to be better to Sarah but is too wrapped up in his own emotional baggage to have any energy to vent his frustrations, so he just pretends he doesnt care. Masking probably comes pretty naturally with being an alternate so everybody just thinks hes an apathetic asshole who puts himself first. And he is, but as a defense strategy to avoid confronting difficult emotions. Maybe Noah was the only person he ever opened up to about all this and thats why he was so ready to come comfort adam when he asked for support.

Anyways, I think about Adam a normal amount :3
