with her daughter bouncing on her hip, lola took in the empty room in front of them again. “this isn’t going to work, is it jelly bean?” the woman had tried everything to get the walls clean before the guest they were expecting was due to arrive, but somehow the last of the stains seemed to be stuck in their place. “well he’ll just have to paint over them, won’t he?” she kissed the top of violet’s head as the toddler pulled at her hair, her blonde strands falling free of the pony tail she’d pulled them into earlier that morning. she’d known that hiring an artist to paint a mural in violet’s room was almost a step too far, but with their new house never seeming to be complete, the woman was ready to take any suggestion she could get.
there was barely a beat between her letting the toddler free of her arms to run around before the doorbell was ringing, violet running ahead of her to mumble the mess of words she’d learnt to the man at the door. “you must be noah?” she clicked the handle over on the wire door to welcome him in quickly.
