Union Overwhelmingly Rejects Proposed Contract, Continues to Strike at Nabisco Bakery

In a video posted by the Portland local union on Thursday morning, a dozen union members stood behind another member who said into a microphone, “We voted no. We support you, but we also need you to support us, and we’re the first ones to walk out, and we’re still going to fight this thing, and we need you to vote no. We got your back. Stay strong, we’re united.”

Taylor is on his way back to Washington D.C to count and present the Portland results to Mondelez and the other striking unions on that same contract at facilities in Richmond, Va., Aurora, Colo., Atlanta and Chicago. The Richmond and Chicago unions are voting on the contract on Friday.

Nabisco workers vote to end strike that began in Portland, spread nationwide

A strike that spread from Portland has ended and Nabisco employees could be back on the production line as soon as Thursday.

Cameron Taylor, a business agent at Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers Local 364 in Portland, said Saturday that about 75% of members approved of the agreement, which got rid of the new healthcare proposal and maintained the regular overtime schedule for most employees.

“What my members wanted was to hold on to their benefits,” Taylor said, noting they mostly got what they wanted.

“What the company did get was a weekend crew,” he said, which he called “a sticking point” with his members.

Nabisco starts to crumble under strike pressure, struggle continues

After five weeks on strike against snack company Nabisco and its parent monopoly, Mondelez International, workers represented by the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers’ International Union (BCTGM) voted to approve a new contract on Sept. 16-17. The union was able to partially derail the company’s aggressive takeback campaign, but the struggle will continue.
