As most of you know I grew up in a liberal bubble which is also know as Boulder, Colorado. By the time I was 5 - I had lived in 3 different states and by the time I was 9 I had lived in 10 different places. The elementary school that I went to in Boulder had a International Baccalaureate program. I got to go to school with kids from all around the world. My best friend in 2nd grade was from Mongolia. In fourth grade, I had friends who were Bosnian refugees. A lot of kids came with their parents who were participating in the international program at CU Boulder. It was a extremely diverse little school. This continued on in middle school and high school. The high school that I went to in Boulder, was a small alternative school to the traditional high school. At New Vista our differences were not only accepted but also celebrated. In my 9th grade civics class (2008), we all volunteered on President Obama's campaign. I should also add that every year, my mom took me to the state capital and I got to see our democracy in action. This has continued throughout my life. In 2012, my mom and I volunteered on President Obama's campaign and a local candidate. I ended up interning in her campaign. I have been thinking a lot these last few weeks about this. I was/am extremely lucky to have grown up like this in my little Boulder bubble that actually wasn't so little. It absolutely baffles my mind that there are people who have never experienced this big beautiful and diverse country. I have to think if everyone did, they would see that our diversity is what makes us strong. The world is a dark enough place at this moment without all of the abominable generalizations about families trying to find a safe place to raise their children. We, ourselves, need enough humanity to make up for those that have none. Continued perpetuation of fear and hatred is only going to continue the cycle of violence. This is a big reason about why I refuse to be quiet to step down and give up. I don't think about it as us vs. them. I think about it as "us". We are all one people and it doesn't matter where you come from. We are all apart of this diverse and beautiful world. No Ban. No Wall. No Fear. No Hate. We are all immigrants and we all deserve the American dream. #NoBanNoWall #NoFearNoHate #hopeishere #lovetrumpshate #RefugeesAreWelcome
