What Honeymoon Period?

This role came up real quick. The recruitment agency called on Wednesday, had the interview on Thursday, got the role on Friday and started on the following Monday. It’s initially a contract role for 3 months with the potential of being extended after Xmas. Cool. The company is a lot bigger than my last, which is what I wanted, so I’m hopeful. Right, so what’s wrong with these people then? I’ve been there for nearly 3 weeks now and can still count on my 2 hands how many people have seen me and come up and introduced themselves. Everyone else either avoids eye contact, or just happy to not acknowledge the fact that you have NEVER seen me in this kitchen before and i am LESS than a metre away. I don’t get. First of all, your not that busy/ that important/ that big in the game to shake my hand one time. Secondly, isn’t it just a normal human being thing, you see someone you don’t recognise, someone new starts, make them feel welcome? Nah? I’m not expecting every man I pass in the corridor to tell me about their granny, but there is some unfriendly vibe going on here and I’m not feeling it. The 2 people I started with also felt the same so I know it’s not just me. 

The times I have introduced myself and tried to start normal human being chit chat, the conversation has been so awkward and brief and they have never asked anything about my background, I’ve just let it go now. Clearly it’s an awkward office, clearly these are not my people, but I feel a way. I feel a way for many a reason, mainly because usually I’d be like yeah let me just wait it out, get this money , get some experience and roll out. But because it’s a contract role, I’m being treated like a robot for this particular project. There’s no opportunity to listen in on conversations or to be involved in the decision making, I’ve been hired to work and meet deadlines. So the fact that the environment is cold and I have so little opportunity to learn,in my mind, this contract is DONE. 

You know when you start a new job and there’s that slight honeymoon period, yeah there’s NONE of that so,let this contract end in 3 months, let it end sooner actually, I’m not impressed at all. The recruitment agency has already been contacted, their on the lookout for the next role, let’s keep it moving.
