Week 5 Writing Response
Process Notes:
I went to Cobb Coffee Shop because I knew it was a great study space (depending on who you are), and because it is always loud—music, conversations, and people ordering food were all consistent background noise. The mix of music and talk in such a small space intrigued me. I took two different noise samples, and then described the smells, which were a majority of pleasant, with very few unpleasant. I chose to define transport because it seemed very unrelated to the place I chose to collect my sounds. The translation of these sounds into meaninglessness was difficult for me, but I ended up taking the beat I heard from the music, the feelings the music created in me, and random words I heard from conversations to create the meaninglessness.
Step 1: Collect Samples
Cobb Coffee Shop on Monday 1/30
Recording #1 Notes
Started at 11:47
Boy and girl having convo at table behind me
Strange background music, woman singing, repetitive, but not pop
I was typing
Recording #2 Notes
Started at 11:59
Calm woman singing in background with catchy beat
Woman and man speaking about homework at table to my front-right
Man leaving through the door
List of Smells
-myself? I actually put on perfume this morning because my outfit is nice
-something tasty and spicy, like a warm bread/ meat pastry
-my orange san Pellegrino, especially when I drink from it
-the smell of the café is hard to describe, but warm and welcoming and bready
-a whiff of something like bleach—a cleaning product used to wipe down my table perhaps?
Step 2: Define Transport
verb
tranˈspôrt/
1. A mode of transitioning objects and subjects from one place to another, usually involving a vehicle of some form.
2. MACRO
a. Transport is revolutionary. Many of the great changes in history—whether cultural, social, military, or even cuisine-related, owe their origins to a new or more efficient form of transport. Think of the caravans on the silk road, effectively connecting the east and the west for the first time. Think of the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, without which the Native Americans might be doing much better, and syphilis much worse. Think of the Wright brothers, and how they indirectly led to 9/11. Transport has changed much, for the better and the worst.
3. micro
a. The very brains that are allowing me to type this and you to read this rely on action potential occurring perfectly in every neuron which composes them, up to 100 times in a single second. To the transport of the sodium ions out of the cell and the transportation of the potassium ions back in we owe all our perceptions and thoughts.
Step 3: Transplate Noise Samples into Non-meaning
