Noises Off - May 2023
The star of 'Noises Off' by Michael Frayn is the set! It's a two story construction with 8 doors, a window, a balcony and three staircases. And it rotates! Since it's not put together at the moment, you'll have to make do with this early rehearsal shot of the cast. Noah Nazim, Amanda Rae Donovan, Colin Hood, Marti Hopson, Laura Stapleton, Mike Mallaley, Richard Haines and Amy Sobol (missing Brian Collins because he's behind the camera, Landwash Studios) Tickets coming soon !

UP FOR THE CHALLENGE- GARNETT GALLANT BUILDING SET FOR ‘NOISES OFF’
- ACT will present this outrageous comedy at Florence Simmons Performance Hall in May 2023.The set for ‘Noises Off’, by Michael Frayn, is a major part of the show. This madcap farce follows a theatre troupe trying, but not exactly succeeding, to put on a play. The audience gets to see the action on and off stage, and thus the set has to be quite versatile! The two-story construction includes eight working doors and a window… as well as multiple sets of stairs and a full balcony that will support several actors at once.Garnett Gallant has spent a half a century with the theatre industry in a variety of roles, including touring the world with the National Ballet of Canada. Building has always been a favourite interest, and when ACT (a community theatre) asked for his help in designing and constructing the set for ‘Noises Off’ in 2019, he was glad to oblige. The set was completed in the winter of 2020 – because this production was scheduled to take place right as the pandemic shut everything down. Now, three years later, it will finally be staged at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall at Holland College in May.The set had to be constructed in many small pieces, and then pieced together like a puzzle. The two storey set was built one floor at a time and then was placed in storage for three years! It will have to be fully erected and tested weeks before the show to make sure it works. Therefore this set will have to be moved and built and taken down…. Twice! It won’t be until very close to opening night that all the pieces will be assembled in one place, and the finishing touches are complete. Gallant is primarily concerned with safety. He says it is important for not just the actors, but for the entire team, to feel secure on this set, which comes apart and rotates during the show. Stay tuned for tickets to go on sale!

Meet the Cast!
Meet the Cast! - EMILY ANNE FULLERTON (as Brooke Ashton / Vicki) Emily Anne Fullerton was born and raised in Charlottetown, PEI. She has a theatre degree from York University and a graduate certificate in PR and communications from Centennial College. While she keeps herself busy with a variety of professional endeavours, the theatre is her first true love. After a rewarding run with Screaming Beaver’s profound REALIZATIONS this past October, she’s excited to be bouncing back into a comedic role. Before that, Emily Anne co-wrote and starred in “It’s Getting Hot In Here!” with Potato Potato Presents at the 2019 Toronto Fringe Festival. “Noises Off!” is her fourth ACT production.
Who is your character? …Playing Brooke is a lot of fun because of the moments where she totally spaces out. That definitely happens to me from time to time. I’d say the way we handle the stage when things go off the rails is pretty different though…wink wink. I think I’m definitely sharper when it comes to my improvising skills (and common sense).
Is it easier to play this character or to be yourself on stage?
…It’s easier to be Brooke! She doesn’t think so much.
What do you love about this character? …She’s funny and she does what she wants. She doesn’t care if she sounds dumb. If she has a question, she just asks it.
What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role? …Not laughing at the things my character says… and not laughing at what my hilarious castmates are doing!
Without giving anything away, what’s your favorite line of dialogue? …“It looks like we’ve got the place entirely to ourselves!” - Freddie
Besides yourself, which actor in this production is going to blow people away? …Cameron Bennett Macdonald! We all know he’s great at comedy, but as my main scene partner in this show, it’s cool to see all the smart character choices he makes. He’s a natural.
What do you enjoy most about doing a comedy? .. It’s a great way to spend my time. It helps me get a dose of joy during the long winter. With that said, this show is highly choreographed and a lot depends on timing. There’s not much room for messing around. We have to be ready to work hard and get it right.
What is your impression of community theatre on PEI? …I think the community theatre scene we have in PEI is fantastic. It allows us to explore different types of shows, not just ones that we think will sell tickets, but stories that we actually want to explore. It allows us to be surrounded by creative, funny, like-minded people, and just do what we love. I’ve made amazing friends in the past, and continue to do so with every show I’m in. We’re really lucky here. We have spaces that want to host us, and hard-working folks who want to give us opportunities. That can be hard to find in other areas. If there’s a show that you want to bring to life here, there’s a pretty great chance that you can make it happen.
What do you want the audience to know about the show? What sort of person should come? …I honestly feel like this is a universally funny show. Who isn’t entertained when something goes completely off the rails? There is some light innuendo, but I feel like it’s appropriate for all ages. My only concern is that one joke in particular might not have aged well… in the way that some Halloween costumes that were once popular are now considered offensive… I think it’s important to be culturally aware, and understand that jokes that may have landed in the 80’s might not appropriate now.
