Circumstances have me revisiting Nomad, the edgy, gritty 90's Marvel comic about Jack Monroe, the third Bucky who becomes a grizzled vigilante. It's very of its era, to the point that I think it was regarded as an embarrassment even at the time, but it's interesting to read now.
For one thing, it obviously draws comparisons to the Winter Soldier (and not just because poor Jack was ignominiously killed off by the real Bucky in the first WS arc, and I'm still sore at Brubaker for that), but just look at the interaction between Jack and Cap:
That's just Bruce and Jason. That's Bruce and Jason after they finally stopped trying to make the Red Hood a villain rather than an antihero. This is exactly the kind of dynamic that would be popular today.
Poor Nomad. Doomed to be both painfully of-his-era and simultaneously before his time.
