God I just finished reading this amazing book and I want to cry for centuries but I can’t because I’m going to France early tomorrow godammit
Anyway, if you like reading, read How To Stop Time by Matt Haig. My review will be up on goodreads shortly!
To all those who are going to watch The Greatest Showman
P.T. Barnum owned a blind, paralysed slave woman over 90 years old who he used to make money by making her an act as the oldest woman alive. When she died he had them perform a public autopsy of her body without her consent.
Charles Stratton, General Tom Thumb, was not 22 as he’s said to be in the movie. He was 4 years old. Yeah. Barnum had him drinking and smoking as part of his act, and lied that he was 11 years old so it wouldn’t be illegal.
Jenny Lind was known to be shy, devout, and humble. She worked hard to get the tickets at a reduced price for the people, whereas Barnum was auctioning them off at ridiculous prices. When she argued with him regarding her salary it was only because she wanted to be able to give as much money as possible to charities. Lind donated most of her earnings to mutiple charities and left Barnum, not because he wasn’t willing to cheat on his wife with her but, because she was uncomfortable with his relentless marketing. He earned almost double the sum she did.
He had white actors perform with black face, making speeches to prove that white people are the “superior race”.
He was famous for tricking his customers, saying “I don’t believe in duping the public, but I believe in first attracting and then pleasing them.”
His deal with Lind took place in 1850, and the rest of the events of the movie took place almost 30 years later when he was 60 years old.
It’s a wonderful movie, but please be aware that the real life P.T. Barnum was nothing short of an absolute rotten human being who only wanted to make money off of other people.
I kind of feel betrayed that the last words Twelve will ever hear Clara say to him are “don’t go forgetting me again because – quite frankly that was offensive”. I’m sorry what??? Clara herself knew what it meant when she agreed that they do it together, and even if it’s just banter, why couldn’t she have just reminded him of what she said in the Cloisters. Or just anything! They’ve been apart for so long, and that’s what she says? What if she’d said something like “You clever boy. You remember me.” or have her thank him for everything?
I guess I shouldn’t be so upset because it’s not really Clara, but still... MOFFAT!!!
The bittersweet look on Twelve’s face when he saw Clara because it was her!! it’s Clara!! But it’s still heartbreaking it’s not her, she’s not really there, she’ll never be. But at least he remembers
oh my god that Wolsey reveal on the white princess
i want the words jonathan how was the pull-out written on my tombstone
just finished watching stranger things season 2 (i was halfway through when they aired back to the future on tv so i had to go watch that) and there are three things i’m shady about rn
1. the whole Kali thing was just way too much. they should’ve kept that for season 3. it just became too much for one season. too many new characters. and honestly it didn’t really matter. you could literally cut out that part and have her go somewhere else and the only difference is we’d have more time for characters we actually care about
2. steve looking at nancy during the snow ball i will die if they try to make the love triangle continue like come on guys. steve deserves someone who loves him just as much as he does them and that’s not nancy sooo
3. jonathan and nancy barely having interaction to talk about their relationship. the only scenes they have together after they fuck/get together is the awesome breakfast scene, holding hands and jonathan holding onto nancy and crying during the exorcism, and that weak ass smile at the dance NO i want them sitting down and talking and stuff and i want them protecting each other i want them crying, running into the each other’s arms, and kissing with tears running down their cheeks when they realised they’re safe oh gOD WHY NETFLIX WHY
