new vegas is a game with a really funny online presence because every few years it gets a new wave of people who get pulled in by the aesthetics of the legion and as a result you get a surge of people who start seriously pondering arcade's dynamic with caesar and what mental game of chess they must be playing when the reality is that caesar's the equivalent of a right wing influencer who follows culture critic and watches youtube compilations of feminists getting owned and arcade is like a doctor with a BFA in classic civ who made the mistake of publicly correcting caesar once and now has to deal with an endless string of DMs begging him for a debate

take another phone with clean chats without discussing politics to photograph violations ✔️

socks, a change of underwear, a bottle of water, necessary medications✔️

warn friends to write to a local human rights organization if I don’t get in touch in a couple of hours✔️

learn “the ideal detainee's guide” and how to correctly fill out a complaint form if they do not provide access to a paper ballot✔️

i love those kind of innocuous posts because its always something like "please dont jump to conclusions" and someone inevitably replies with 'don't tell ME not to jump to conclusions'

i literally didn't even think twice about the post until i logged in yesterday and was suddenly the public enemy of education reform and stem classes

I love your English Class post, but I also think a lot of teachers do it wrong and teach general contrarianism rather than critical thinking.

(inspired by my teacher who hammered on "Question all authority!", but got big mad when you actually do the research and decide that sometimes authority has a point. And, ironically, didn't like when questioned about why all authority is inherently bad!)

i definitely think english as a curriculum (and the american education system in general) aren't airtight, and the presence of these topics by no means guarantees they're being taught well. teaching in k12 (and in higher education as of late lol) is a vastly underpaid profession, so it's not very lucrative for people who would probably perform the best at it! but i also don't think anyone interacting with that post is under the impression that america is good at educating it's students lol

i think more than anything the post was just because a lot of people don't really understand what teaching these skills actually looks like in practice. a lot of people in the tags hadn't, in fact, made the connection. and i think even as an adult understanding that literature is a great facet of developing that skill is important. and this is by no means saying literature is the only means of doing that, lol
