it's crazy how good of a design and concept joseph wilson/jericho was and how every subsequent writer after wolfman (outside of maybe one or two issues) just served to dilute everything that made him unique and slowly turn him into what is functionally now at best grant wilson and at worst a flop x-men oc

There’s a post going around about someone saying that Jason isn’t actually victim-blamed and was wondering what you think about that and you’re thoughts about Jason’s death and how it was handled in general

i’m like.. half-and-half on this. i do think i agree that on the most technical level “victim-blame” is maybe the wrong word to use and it does rob jason of agency for his motivations and actions (esp as the element of him searching for sheila and finding her is erased entirely from comics published post-resurrection). but i also think op’s focus on agency to justify how jason is perceived by others is a bit ironic because i mean.. the fact that people like bruce or tim or dick or barbara afford him agency is also accompanied by the fact that they consistently deny him personhood (albeit i will interject here that i think it’s ooc for bruce and esp barbara to be guilty of this and i will never buy it personally). the problem is less that he’s blamed at all for his actions and more that he’s made exclusively into a symbol of what not to do / be while all else about his life is shut behind closed doors and ignored until he’s distilled into little more than a martyr. and admittedly, maybe the reason that’s so often overlooked is because of how apathetic winick or writers thereafter are to dealing with the complexities of grief and loss and the inevitable objectification that comes with it. i went into it in more detail here, but realistically aside from the contention with the joker specifically i think the most potent issue to explore with jason post-resurrection should have been the reclamation and / or rejection of his personhood. all of the aforementioned people were entitled to their various reactions to his death, but that entitlement obv came at the cost of reducing jason to what he did and not who he was, and the near-suicidal modus operandi of the red hood should have triggered at least someone (bruce / barbara) to question the consequences of that reduction. but because the focus in under the hood is so heavily on what jason does and not who he is (to the extent that his entire backstory prior to his death is rendered completely irrelevant), we don’t actually get that moment of recognition from anyone. it’s not important to anyone that jason denies himself life via the red hood. in under the hood and up through the end of the original post-crisis era as we know it, it’s only important that he be stopped for the sake of others, not for the sake of himself. he’s basically a suicidal operative and not even bruce cares despite how relentlessly he beat himself up over his part in jason’s death in the 90s. op mentions towards the end of their post that sometimes stories just aren’t about your fave, and that’s true to an extent, but the problem is that not even jason’s stories are actually about him. they’re about ideology, they’re about the no kill rule, they’re about everyone else’s guilt over his death or the lack thereof. they’re never about jason’s life, or about what he stands to lose if not only he but the people around him deny him the right to live it

It's really so sad that nothing ever came from the developments Jason got during Morrison's time with him in Batman & Robin/Batman inc and Dini and co's work on Countdown because as much as I have issues with both, Jason surrendering upon realizing Dick was just fundamentally never going to be the Batman that Bruce was (which was a good thing for Dick, but a bad thing for Jason) and him seeing the reality of what Bruce Wayne would look like if he gave into the paranoid impulses that Jason had should've both been such load bearing moments for his character and his dynamic with both of them and now it's hard to say if either are even canon anymore

I don't often post about my Marvel reading on here but I am a big Iron Man fan and that new first issue is really rough. I thought maybe Williamson could surprise me with this book but he immediately just followed all his worse impulses. Doesn't help that it feels like his only preparation for this script was watching the Iron Man movies lol

I’ve seen so many ppl compare Jason and Anakin I’m surprised you didn’t!

i think there are ways in which their circumstances are somewhat similar but to me the very glaring difference between them is that anakin is propelled by his hopelessness and belief that he no longer has anything to protect / live for. his decision to finally give into the sith and their senseless violence is not so much a choice that he desires but one that he is progressively caged into making as palpatine manufactures the circumstances around anakin to make him feel utterly powerless. this is why anakin’s redemption via luke is so important because luke is the first person in near two decades who actually believes in anakin and his capacity for good. he gives anakin hope after years of palpatine blotting it out and it’s what gives anakin the courage to break free

jason’s indulgence in violence is comparatively very intentional. the suicidal nature of his identity as the red hood is very intentional. he makes a conscious decision to sacrifice his own existence as jason todd for the sake of his mission, even though he is only eighteen years old and has his whole life ahead of him. what he needs isn’t for someone to believe in him and his capacity for good. he knows that he can be good, that he can be “better,” and he is choosing not to be. what he needs is for someone who values his childhood / life outside of the mask to shake him by the shoulders and say “this is not your burden alone to bear and you cannot kill your way into making the world a safer place” because jason’s problem, unlike anakin’s, isn’t despair, it’s delusion

The thing about Gotham Knights (game) is that every thing I liked about it (some combat, the city itself, Bruce's face model) are outweighed by things I don't like (literally all four character's characterization, the weird Kane family/Court of Owls bs, sanitized iterations of virtually every character involved)
