Esther is the whole reason Daniel and Paige are both on the show! She more or less tricked them into auditioning, hiding the fact that she was putting together the other's tape. It came back to bite them a year later when they were tricked into becoming an intern by Nat, who offered them "a totally innocent behind the scenes tour". Now, they're just as stuck as everyone else, watching from the sidelines and behind monitors. But don't ever think that that means they're safe from their own share of drama!
