It was midafternoon and (_____) found herself once again perched on the old rickety chair laptop before her. Yet her eyes strayed to the light filtering into the room through the open blinds. Her mind ran rampant, trying and failing to piece together the images that plagued her hazy mind all morning. She tried and failed time and time again as if it were all a dream. Surely that must’ve been it, but something nagged at her and all she could remember was the bite of cold that clung to her skin. A shiver raced down her back, her eyes darting across the room towards the blinds. The light falling over a shadow that danced across the room. One she didn’t know was there and maybe that was because it wasn’t.
Her gaze remained fixated on the streams of light, catching figures, and casting shadows in odd places. She could hear her sister animatedly talking about something she had seen on social media, the words filtering into her ears yet not being comprehended. It wasn’t a habit she practiced often if at all really. It was just that her mind was preoccupied even as she hummed along with whatever her sister was saying. Carob gaze shot over to the hallway where (_____) thought she saw someone before looking back down at the screen before her. Eyes squinted she tried to read over her latest spiel of what she liked to call creativity. The words blurring before her as her eyes darted up once more towards the sunlight dancing across the carpet.
She blinked once, twice and suddenly found herself out in the open. Sun beating down on her, skin feeling the extent of the heat as it soaked into her body. Her chest heaved as she took in as much air as she could. The taste of salt touched the tip of her tongue as her breathing slowed and brought her some comfort. Her mouth felt dry, licking her lips she stepped forward feet burning as they carried her over the dune and closer to the source of the lingering salt in the air. Eyes wide she found that her assumptions had been correct. The ocean crashed against the shoreline the breeze stifling.
It had been a long time since she had been to the beach, and yet it felt like home. It was in that moment she felt the stinging burn in the soles of her feet and she began to sprint towards the shoreline her feet coming into contact with the cool water. A sigh slid past her lips and she basked in the gentle lapping at her ankles. Sweat beaded at the nape of her neck as she stood stock still in the water her gaze traveling the horizon. Something about this seemingly barren beach put her off. Her senses dulled as her eyes wandered her head turning to the left and then to the right. There in the close distance some odd yards away was a man hazelnut hair and tall, much taller than her. His frame was lithe, skin seemingly spotless.
Pale, was a word that came to mind when she looked at him. Even despite the color he lacked in his skin he screamed warmth. Her gaze burned onto his frame and it was him who finally met her eyes. He was further away than she thought and she could not make out the exact color of his eyes but something about him rung familiar. Her mind again screamed at her, run, run, RUN. It yelled in hopes that she would tear her gaze from his and flee like she should. She didn’t move, her limbs remained frozen to the place where she stood. Feet stuck to the sand as the water continued to lap at her heels. He didn’t move just continued to gaze at her. A strange tingle spread throughout her; first licking its way through her chest, then to her torso until it engulfed her whole being in a strange and intoxicating heat.
Her skin felt like it was set ablaze the heat once warm now scalding. Making her eyes tear up and her vision blur with tears. She felt the heat lick at her skin making it feel like it was burning off. Her bones felt like jelly and still she did not tear her gaze away from the man. His eyes obscured as she felt the scream ripped from her throat. She watched the soft smile line his lips and she went crashing, crashing back into reality where she sat before her laptop. Her sister standing and rushing to grab her wallet as the pizza she had ordered had finally arrived. Her skin felt warm, too warm for this seemingly cool October evening. The sun had now dipped lower into the sky casting pastel swirls of pink, blues and yellows to dance across the sky for the oncoming purples and blacks of the night.
She closed her laptop content on not finishing her thought for sustenance; her mind shifting to the still uncomfortable warmth that clung to her like a second skin. Tomorrow she had class and she hadn’t bothered with the reading assignment the professor had assigned last class. She’d try to cram it in before her class but she doubted she’d get to it for her mind was still running rampant with the new man, as her heart beat in her chest. Her nerves felt unease as she piled her plate with pan and stuffed crush pizza. Soon falling into a comfortable mind numbing silence as she watched Bob’s Burgers with her sister
