Made myself a new bag last week. I needed another lighter one for the spring and summer and thought I would use a different pattern for a change, having made several Merchant and Mills Factotums over the last couple of years.
This one is the Noodlehead Patterns Campfire Messenger Bag. I made it up in contrasting canvas, with poplin for the lining, foregoing the back outer zip pocket as I never use them and adding a zip to the interior pocket instead:
The pockets on the front are nice and roomy but I wish I’d widened the gusset as there’s not as much space inside as I would have liked. I didn’t have any snaps so the fastening on the front are velcro which works fine.
It was an easy enough pattern to assemble but when it came to attaching the binding around the top getting it under the machine was a trial; I have a Singer Heavy Duty but it still had trouble coping as there’s not much room to manoeuvre things around and I was glad I hadn’t had enough wadding for the whole bag as that would have made things even worse. If I make it again I think I’d attach the lining a bit differently, and definitely hand finish the binding, which I had to do around the zip as the machine just wouldn’t sew over it. I wouldn’t use a chunky zip again, for the same reason. The strap should have been adjustable but unfortunately because it’s made in two pieces the join wouldn’t fit through the slider so it’s fixed. That’s something else I’ll look at changing if I make it again.
Otherwise, it turned out pretty well! Hopefully it’ll last a bit longer than the last couple of summer bags I’ve made…
