Diary - RYI

Some new stuff from lesser-known RYI. 7 minutes of absolute bliss. I find it hard to describe this type of music. I suppose it could be labeled as melodic electronic, bordering on house, but to me it’s just a sweet sounding tune that makes me want to kick-back with a pair of headphones and disconnect from the world for a while.

Shred For Summer - DZ Deathrays

I’ve been killing these guy’s new album “Bloody Lovely” lately. If you love heavy, thrashy guitar riffs with loads of distortion then you’ll love these guys. They remind me a bit of Royal Blood, but in a way they’re really way more Aussie in their sound. Not complaining though, the album is well worth a listen and the perfect soundtrack to Monday, when you need to get shit done and in the mood for something a bit heavy.

Smiger - Kaada

Years ago, after a friend of mine delved down an ill-advised Mike Patton rabbit-hole, he came back up with Kaada (full name: John Erik Kaada), a Norwegian singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. He’d worked with Mike Patton and was signed to a label of his at one point, too. 

This album struck me at the time, though, and still does today. It has a really fragile sadness to it but somehow avoids saccharine. Beautiful song, and nice music video, too. While his work also varies a lot across albums, I’d say this is his high point and I’d highly recommend checking out the whole album.

Everything’s New - Mutemath

It seems Mutemath are keeping up with their “an album a year” approach to releasing new music. With each new album release, they seem to slightly change their sound, chuck in some new sounds and keep evolving. I really like this groovy and slightly weird number off their most recent album, Play Dead. Paul Meany’s vocals are still as recognisable as ever however. Enjoy.

No Good - Battle Tapes

Some new music from the lesser-known Battle Tapes. I really like how these guys manage to mix electronic synth sounds with rock and alternative elements. Their new EP simply titled “Form” still features their trademark mixmash of sounds and is well worth a listen. While you’re at it, give their full length album “Polygon” a whirl.

Non Believer - London Grammar

LG has just recently released their highly anticipated second album, Truth Is A Beautiful Thing , which I’ve been thoroughly enjoying this past week. I think it’s safe to say they’ve taken their time with this new album (four years in fact since their highly acclaimed debut album If You Wait) and subsequently avoided the dreaded “second album curse”. Hannah Reid’s vocal range is the star of the show, combined relatively uncomplicated yet polished song structures. Well worth a listen.

Seasons - Chris Cornell. I’m still so cut up about Chris Cornell’s death. I haven’t been this upset about an artist dying in a long time. His voice was incomparable. He seemed happy, and he seemed so together. I’ve seen him live 7 times; 4 with Soundgarden and 3 solo, and each time he was amazing. In fact, his solo acoustic gig at Palais Theatre in Melbourne in October 2011 ranks within my top 5 favourite gigs of all time. We’ll always have the music. This track is taken from the soundtrack from the film, ‘Singles.’ In fact, the deluxe edition was released just two days after his death. It’s as raw as it gets. Youtube here.
