Burden In My Hand
I could not for the life of me find any good photos of Ben when he had the stubble in the mid 90s, but I'm sure you know what he looked like when he had it. I only looked over this once, so my apologies if there are any typos
As I stepped out of the shower, steam hit my body like a bullet. I hated the feeling, water dripping off me while the fan hit my skin. I quickly reached for the towel and dried myself off, then wrapped the fabric around my body. The mirror was all fogged up, so I was currently a blob in its reflection. Everything was so still, so quiet. I closed my eyes and took a few deep breaths. I might have stayed like that longer if it wasn't for the sound of the front door being slammed shut. I opened my eyes, and turned my head towards the door. It was silent outside, until the sound of someone walking through the hall could be heard, then into the bedroom. I heard the bedroom door shut, then the sound of things shuffling around. Ben was home. I smiled to myself as I reached up to rub at the condensation on the mirror. I could finally see myself properly now, my hair wet and dripping onto my once dry back. I looked a little washed out, but that wasn't unusual. I dropped my gaze down at the sink basin, and picked up the hair brush, and started running it through my wet hair. Next to where the brush had been was a can of shaving cream, and a few razors. There was no use in them being there, not really. Ben hadn't touched them in months. His face had started to grow scruffy facial hair. But I wasn't one to complain, it tickled my face whenever he hugged me and dipped his head to lean it on my shoulder, scratching the side of my neck, or whenever we kissed. His facial hair would slightly rub against the skin above my lip and make me giggle against his lips. He wouldn't ever admit it, but I was sure he liked it, the effect it had on me. Especially when it left small red marks on the insides of my thighs.
I finished brushing my hair, put the brush back next to Ben's discarded possessions, then dropped the towel to the ground. More cold air hit my skin, but it wasn't nearly as bad as when I first got out of the shower. I reached down to the floor where I dropped my pyjamas. An old Soundgarden top of Bens, and a pair of boxers I’d stolen from a pack that he had bought when we first started dating. He’d try to grab them back, but I gave him a pout and suddenly he forgot that I'd stolen them. It had really struck me how he was taller than I was, stronger even, yet he decided to let me win. He always did. Even when we had the odd argument, he was calm, listened, and never raised his voice. Not that he didn't have any pride, oh no, he had heaps of it. But he made sure to listen to me first before trying to explain himself.
Before I opened the door, I took another look at the shaving cream and shaver on the sink. I knew as soon as I opened that door, and stepped into our bedroom, I'd be met with the sight of Ben hunched over, sitting on the edge of the bed, shoulders tight and eyes tired. And I knew as soon as I walked up to him, he’d lift his head and smile at me. He'd try and hide how tired he was, how stressed he’d become, because he never liked me to worry. But I would worry, because Ben was the type to push himself til he was a broken rag. And he’d never admit it. He’d brush it off with a “yeah, but this is what's expected”.
My eyes drifted away from the shaver, and to the door knob. I opened the door and pushed it open, turning the bathroom light off, and stepped into the bedroom. It was exactly how I expected it to be. There Ben was, hunched over, the muscles of his back being pushed up against his top. I took a few more steps, yet he still didn't look up. He was probably so stuck in his head that he hadn't even heard me leave the bathroom.
“Ben.” I said his name finally, his name cutting through the quiet air. My voice was clear, yet I could hear the worry in it. And if I could hear it, then Ben definitely could. He lifted his head up, turned around to look at me, before he smiled at me, tired and small. Our eyes locked, and I let out a sigh, slowly starting to walk towards him. Ben stood up slowly, his shoulders hunched over, all his movements sluggish. We met finally, and I instantly brought my hands up to cup his cheeks. They felt rough under my freshly cleaned hands, but I loved the feeling. Ben's eyes found mine, and he let out a sigh himself. His arms slowly went around my waist, loose at first, but they slowly tightened, and I was brought closer into him. His arms, strong around my body, felt heavy. So did his eyes, He looked like he hadn't gotten a proper sleep in a few months, which was probably true.
”You look tired sweetheart.” I said quietly, my thumbs brushing up and down his cheek bones, feeling him take a deep breath in, then out, his chest pushing back into mine. He closed his eyes, while I took in the sight of his weary state. My heart clenched as I lifted both my hands from his cheeks, bringing them around to the back of his head, my hands closing around the soft brow hair. I gently pulled his head down to rest on my shoulder, and Ben let me. He complied until his forehead made contact with my shoulder. He was hunched over to lean on my shoulders, and I knew it wasn't comfortable. But with a bit of movement, Ben found comfort in shoving his face into the crook of my neck, his facial hair scratching the soft skin, sending little jolts down my neck. My hands, now coming around to rest on his back, felt how tense his muscles were,
“I’ll be fine.” Ben mumbled against my neck, now leaving small little kisses to the skin, the movement of his facial hair scratching my neck more. It felt nice, but I wasn't here to think about how I felt. I needed to take care of Ben. My hands started to rub up and down his back slowly, feeling his muscles tense then relax under my touch.
“But you're not, Ben. You haven't been sleeping properly lately, and it's not good for you.” I said calmly, feeling him sigh against my skin, stopping his kissing. His hands slithered around my body til they were just holding my hips, firm and steady.
“Im fine really.” Ben left a few more kisses on my neck, before slowly, again, sluggishly, lifting his head up, and straightening up to his full height. His shoulders still looked tense, and it killed me to see him this way. I drifted my hands from his back up to hold onto his shoulders, slightly squeezing them, looking up into his eyes. They looked even more tired. He could probably fall asleep right now if he let it. But he hadn't been letting sleep take over. His hands on my hips faltered, before rising up to my waist.
“You’re not Ben. Please, just come to bed with me and sleep.” I put emphasis on the ‘sleep’, my eyebrows furrowing. Ben let out a long sigh, closing his eyes. When he opened them, he had that small smile on his lips again. It wasn't exactly his usual mischievous smile, but it was something.
“Fine. You've got me.” He finally spoke, letting himself go. My lips spread into a wide smile, my left hand finding its way to his cheek to hold it gently. Ben closed his eyes, leaning into my touch, before slowly shuffling us so my knees were pressed up against the mattress. Ben leaned down to plant a soft kiss on my lips. His lips were dry, probably from biting them in concentration down at the studio.
“Ive missed you.” He mumbled against my lips as he gently leaned me down to lay on the mattress, my legs still dangling off the edge of the bed. I looked up at him as he lowered himself down to rest his elbows on either side of my head, his body slotting between my legs. He dipped his head down to my neck, leaving kisses like before. I peered down at him and sighed.
“This isn't sleeping, Darling.” I whispered, my hands reaching down to lift his face to look up at me. His eyes were so tired, his face had lines on it that I had never seen before, and his brow was furrowed. But he looked at me like I'd slapped him.
“This will help me sleep, I promise Doll.” He spoke, his lips barely moving. So we shuffled up the bed, and after a lot of coaxing, Ben lowered his whole body weight onto me, as he continued his kiss attack. I knew we wouldn't be sleeping for at least another hour. But he wasn't lying when he said he’s missed this. I had too. Besides, the marks on the inside of my thighs were starting to fade anyway.
