Kingdom headcanons: Norberg

I’ve decided to do a headcanons series about the other major kingdoms in EOA, starting with the Turner family’s native Norberg.

It’s all but confirmed that Norberg is based on the Netherlands, with Craig’s “not Scandinavia” response, the emphasis on ships and trade, and the style of Naomi’s dress. Since Avalor’s continent already has a lot of post-colonial influences, I headcanon Norberg as a cross between New York if the British never took it over and South Africa.

Though it is located far to the north of Avalor, the warm ocean currents give Norberg a pleasant climate 7-8 months out of the year. Most major cities are located along the coast and extensive river delta, though the kingdom also contains forested hills and low-lying plains. Its main industries are shipping, mining, and finance, and it had the busiest port in the world before Avalor surpassed it.

Norberg is a constitutional monarchy ruled by the Amstel royal family, headed by Queen Chantal (Gabrielle Union) and her husband King Peter (Crispin Freeman). They have three children, ages 17, 20, and 22. Chantal’s mother Queen Natalie was a personal friend of Queen Lucia, which has inspired Chantal to pursue a close alliance with Princess Elena.

Chantal became queen as a 21-year-old newlywed, following Queen Natalie’s death from a sudden illness contracted during a state visit to Avalor. Although a joint investigation turned up no signs of foul play, Chantal remained deeply suspicious of Queen Shuriki. In her first several years as queen, Chantal had to resolve a series of aggressive territorial disputes with their neighbor Vespuga, as well as quell a rebellion from an alliance of powerful rural nobility.

Always patient and strong-willed, a quarter century of ruling has given Chantal wisdom and a drive to protect her people. Peter, a Navy officer and former nobleman, works with the Norberg parliament to implement Chantal’s populist policies, which have earned her the favor of Norberg’s merchant and working classes. Under their rule, Norberg has experienced a cultural renaissance, with local artists producing distinct new styles of art, writing, and music.
