Gravity
Gravity: Were you ever in a situation that forced you to stop being scared?
Nope, I don’t think so. I mean, there’s been lots of situations that forced me to ignore the fact I was scared as fuck and do the thing anyway, but. The fear never goes away by simply forcing it to, huh? Or at least it doesn't happen for me just like that, haha.
|| Becoming || Chapter Four
Long overdue fic for nordicphile it’s so damn late and I’m super sorry.
Prompt: Nyo!DenNor. Denmark’s a knight, gets hurt and is found by Norway and is helped. The two begin visiting regularly etc.
She was going insane. This woman was haunting her for some reason that only the gods could understand. Kjetil could hardly leave her room and even there she wasn’t safe. Not in her sleep, not when she was in the ring, not when she was eating: Ane stayed just out of sight, but made her presence known well enough it was like she had her in a headlock.
Kjetil broke.
There was no way she could handle this when her next assignment would take her to Agion to train in their courts. Who the hell would allow a maddened female knight to train in their palace grounds? No one sane would permit her to stay on the premises let alone get near their equivalent of knights. She was at her wits end. It wasn’t as if she was going away to fight—no she was going away as a diplomat. Kjetil would put the nation in a very precarious situation that could lead to the severing of ties and then lead to a war and that weight could not rest on her head. She would die before dragging her country down in a fit of madness.
That was it. That was what made her decide that she must return to the woods and seek out Ane and force her to remove this … This curse! Not even the day after the idea had come to mind she began preparing supplies for her trip. She did not know the length she would be staying, nor if she would be coming back, but the Gods knew that she was going to find her no matter what it took. She would pass out of exhaustion, wake up, then continue on her search: this damned woman would not allow her to fall into madness! (Unless you already consider the state she was in madness, because there was a thin line and she was inching her way closer to crossing it with each toll of the watchtower.)
It was no surprise to her when Nami demanded to know where she was going, or told her that she was accompanying her, the stony look did not faze her. Instead Kjetil stared back at her with a blank look, tired and worn, so old for such a young face. In the end Nami did not accompany her, but she took her horse and saddle with words of warning about the forest ringing through the training ground as she tore out the gates. She would find the witch and burn her out if she had to!
~
Kjetil had been moving through the dark forest at a slow pace, much slower compared to the breakneck speed at which her mule had been gravely injured, when shit began to happen. He slow progress was mostly because the horse she was on was Nami’s, and the woman would actually string her up by her toes, slit her throat, let all the blood run out of her body and wear her skin as a suit. But all of that was beside the point.
Wandering aimlessly through the forest on horseback became a struggle sooner rather than later. Going just a few meters was slow and tedious work; making sure the horse didn’t lose her footing, making sure she herself didn’t lead the two of them into a tree or into a spidril nest… She couldn’t let her mind wander even for a few moments. Even if it was just to focus on the curious heavy atmosphere of the woods. And by curious she meant terrifying as hell.
Eventually her eyes became so tired there was nothing she could do but stop and get some rest. She had no clue as to what the time was: in the forest there was no true day or night, only the dimly lit part of the day and hardly lit part of the supposed night. Even the three moons could not shine through in some parts. The forest was rumored to be enchanted (which would explain a lot about Ane) and Kjetil was inclined to believe the rumors at this point. Even the trees seemed to have something wrong with them; their smooth, purpling trunks that seemed to go up and up forever without even a single branch interrupting their upward climb looked sinister. Especially when she was alone in the damned woods with nothing but a stupid horse and (maybe) a witch somewhere in the heart of these woods.
Kjetil unsaddled and unbridled the mare, watching the poor beast carefully. From the moment they’d stepped into the woods the whites of the horse’s eyes had been rolling and it seemed to be just a matter of time before she bolted. With this in mind, Kjetil made quick work of removing anything that could be useful for her travels through this hellscape. For a few moments the mare seemed alright, with the saddle off her shoulders seemed to relax a bit but the horse never once bent its head to eat a bite of the small plant life that managed to grow in relative darkness.
If anything, it was the horse that was making her feeling of unease grow more and more as she began making camp. She knew animals had much keener senses than humans and they could sometimes be used to detect the presence of witchcraft.
Trying to ignore the damn horse, the fearless lady knight unrolled her blanket on the ground of the forest, taking in where she would be exploring for the next few days: the ground covered in smatterings of small plant life, large roots, and decaying leaves, the smell of fresh dirt and pine invading her nostrils.
Pine? There are no pine trees here.
Kjetil’s line of vision zeroed in on the mare. Its ears were pinned to the back of its head while it seemed to do a jittery dance, not seeming to notice the plants that were being crushed under heavy hooves. That was her second warning; the third came mere moments after the second warning. All noise in the forest came to a sudden halt.
