Mid-afternoon.
A stark landscape is soaked in light. The air is soft with sounds of forest, but the ground is exposed and fruitless. If there were once a forest there, it is no longer present to keep the land’s secrets.
The sun falls hard upon a small pedestal built of red stone, slightly overgrown and marked with strange hieroglyphs. A girl lies sprawled across a cracked bowl mounted at its short summit.
The girl’s eyes are shut; she slumbers, but if she were awake, she would not have known any more than we do why she was there.
