Summary: Xadre makes a fatal error and reveals himself as a Skrull.
Featuring: Xadre ( @noredbull )
Triggers: violence, death, Skrulls are dicks
Xadre knew that this day would come. From the minute Veranke placed him in Sam Wilson’s body, he had realised that it was only a matter of time before Morse became nothing more than a hindrance, or became wise of her ‘boyfriend’s’ true identity. He had sensed her suspicion, ever growing over the past few weeks, and he knew that if she confronted him, it would be far too late. After all, he was a scientist, and although she was merely an enhanced human, still far below the Kree that Skrullos had faced in the past, she undoubtedly had more combat experience, especially in short range. For that reason, he waited until she was asleep. As she was in the midst of her slumber, Xadre removed the short range pistol that Wilson had a fondness for, and levelled it at the woman’s head.
Any number of potential cover stories whirred around in his mind as his finger rested on the trigger. Sam Wilson might have gone mad when he realised that the end of his world was nigh, or perhaps he had been a better liar than anyone ever suspected. Maybe the stress of being the leader of the Panel had gotten to Morse – he could stage it to look as if it was self-inflicted, he was sure of it. The hesitation, however, would ultimately cost him. Albert, the larger of the two dogs, rose from its snores, looking over at him in the darkness.
Within moments, the smaller dog curled into its side also woke up, and together, they let out loud howls into the night air.
Bobbi woke with a start as the dogs began howling. Something was pointed in her face, and it took her a moment to register the fact that it was a gun. Rather than a stranger holding it like she was prepared for, it was her boyfriend clutching the weapon. Adrenaline immediately kicked it, and she rolled away, landing in a crouch. When she moved again, it was quickly, and she clutched Sam’s arm, wrenching it backward so if it fired, it would be at the ceiling rather than at her. “Did you have a nightmare, baby?” She asked cooly. Idly, she contemplated whether the lack of response proved that she was completely void of emotion or paranoid enough to notice the slight changes in Sam’s demeanour, his strange questions, prying for information especially. “Should I call a counsellor? This is so unlike you.”
The dogs were a variable that Xadre hadn't considered. For that, he could hear his sister chastising him firmly, and their mother rolling her eyes from beyond this existence. Nevertheless, he was confident in both Wilson's muscle memory and his own enhanced physiology, if such a need should arise. The Queen said that humans would fall, and this human was no exception.
Despite this, however, Morse continued to surprise. Living with the woman had given him some indication as to her skills, but as with everything else, Morse hid details until they were most needed. "Yeah," he said finally. Biding time could only work so long. He released his grip on the trigger, hoping that his face reflected the guilt and regret he had seen on those veterans. "I'm ... I'm so sorry, babe. The power swap and the invasion, they must've got to my head. I can go, nothing I can say will make up for it but... I really am sorry." She wouldn't buy it. Xadre knew that, but so far, he had no better plan.
As Sam spoke, Bobbi wrenched his arm back further, waiting until she heard the bone break. Maybe it was a little harsh, but he had just tried to kill her, and that was definitely not her boyfriend. "That's hilarious," she said, snickering. "You actually think I'd let you go after you attempted to kill me? Who's next on your agenda, Steve?" As his grip released on the trigger, she snatched the gun from his grasp, and quickly unloaded the gun, turning the safety on. "So, are you going to tell me who you are? We can go the cliche route and I can torture you until you explain your whole villain plan." Idly, she wondered how long the Skrull (there was no doubt in her mind that he was an alien) had taken over her boyfriends body. God, she'd been oblivious, chalking all of his pecuilar behaviour up to her paranoia.
Bobbi Morse had always been anticipated to be a problem. Veranke had remained concerned about Xadre’s potential to cope with such a sensitive matter, but he had been determined to prove that he was his mother’s son. As it turned out, his sister had been correct. He was woefully out of his depth, proven by the crack in his arm, and how fluently she pulled the gun on him. “Bobbi,” Xadre said, in a voice that he knew Wilson used only rarely – broken, strained, pleading. “Don’t do this.” There was no coming back, however, unless somehow he could knock her out and convince her a super-villain had brought her worst nightmare to life. Xadre remained still, breathing shallowly.
He loves us. Xadre could do this. “Protective of others?” Xadre said, tilting his head to the side. “If only you had extended the same courtesy to yourself. Trusting someone with your all, in a position like yours? Pathetic.” With that, he moved to grab the gun as his sister had shown him, his other hand going for Morse’s wrist.
Whoever the alien was, it wasn’t Sam, and that was all Bobbi needed to know. She trusted her boyfriend, and he would never attempt to pull a gun on her, especially while she was peacefully sleeping. Sam Wilson would do anything to protect the people he cared about, and she had no doubt that she was among them. That was all logical, all facts. Unfortunately, staring down an alien identical boyfriend with a gun in hand was also a tad emotional. She was angry beyond belief, betrayed, and already guilty about what she had to do. Skrulls were truly the bane of Satan. “Funny, I would have asked you the same thing a couple minutes ago if you had the guts to attack me while I was awake,” she said coldly.
Immediately, the Skrull blew their moment, all cockiness. Of course it would have to be obnoxious on top of deceitful. “You never did your homework? Disappointing, I would have bothered understanding my mark.” If it was narcissistic, her words would provoke it. “So is being too afraid to fight me fairly.” As it lunged towards her, Bobbi reared her leg forward, using all the strength she possessed, and aimed for its gut. She let him grip her wrist, and then wrenched it backwards, once again using her superior strength. The serum was good for injuring a complete prick. “Where is Sam?”
Bobbi Morse, among other things, was impulsive. In battle, she ran her mouth off, and she trusted that her superior strength would carry her forward. In the memories Xadre had received from Sam Wilson, he knew that there were times of great strife when she had faced her foes with a joke and a broken plant pot (something Wilson found amazing and Xadre wished only to roll his eyes at). That would not satisfy tonight, even if her strength would pose an issue. His sister, perhaps, would know how to use her cockiness against her. Xadre, though, relied mostly on his intelligence, something that Morse, as wounding as it was to admit, was close to matching him in. (Perhaps she even had, though he would not even think of it.) "I would fight if it were a worthy battle," Xadre replied, but his next words were cut off by Morse's kick hitting into his stomach, and her grip cracking the bones that Xadre had so formed. "Where do you think?" Xadre spat, noting that the woman was not pressing a knife to his throat, or a gun to his head. "Dead, like all the rest we have replaced. Your world is crumbling around you, Morse, and yet you stand here thinking that fighting me will solve anything. You are weak. You are pathetic. You think you're the hero, but our plans? They have always been above the capabilities of human comprehension - even one supposed to be a genius such as yourself."
“Your life is a worthy battle,” Bobbi replied, assuming that this Skrull was no combatant. A basic instinct was to defend one’s life, and since he seemed relatively incapable of it, the conclusion was natural to draw. Skrulls were living beings with basic needs, and that implied that their nervous system, their primary instincts, were similar to a humans. At his words, her grip tightened, cracking his bones further. Ultimately, her goal was to force it to shed Sam’s skin, though she was unsure how much brunt force that would take. The Skrulls were very much a mystery to her, and to every hero on Earth, and that left them with an advantage (as much as it disgusted Bobbi to admit). “What did you get out of murdering them?” She demanded coldly, the underlying threat clear in her words. The second the Skrull stopped answering her questions was the second she would discover whether death was the only way to force it out of human skin. “Fighting you solved a whole lot,” she replied, irritated by how insanely smug the being seemed. “I’m not dead, but you will be. It might not solve the problem of the invasion, but one less of you is a point in our favour. Are you always this obnoxious and presumptuous? It’s pathetic, honestly.”
Xadre was beyond out of his depth, and he knew it. He wasn't afraid of dying - far from it. He knew that regardless of one soldier falling, the invasion would ultimately continue, and Morse would find her end at the hands of his comrades, falling because of her resistance to the Skrull Empire. There was no version of this where she ended up on top, or where she managed to get out alive, regardless of whether it was Xadre who ended her life, his sister, or their queen herself. "Do you think I will yield to your demands?" Xadre asked, raising his eyebrow. A bitter smirk didn't sit comfortably on Wilson's face, but it was invigorating to be able to show something of his true self, undoubtedly making the woman doubt everything around her. "Do you think me an idiot? You did not kill the pathetic foot-soldier that your 'Human Torch' captured at the gathering. You wished to pump him for information, yet you want to tell me that you will drop me where I stand?" Xadre let out a short, bitter laugh. "No, Morse, I don't think that you will. If you were going to, it would have happened by now." Talking to her, trying to appeal to her higher reasoning, was the only chance he had to think of a way out. She was a scientist, even if her genius was not of the calibre of his own, and therefore would be inclined to listen to reason - at least she would be, if he didn't possess the face of her boyfriend. Humans were always let down by their sentimentality, in the end.
This alien never stopped talking. It was unfortunate, especially when he prattled on uselessly. If it were anything of value, Bobbi might have been able to control her emotions easier. Instead he was informing her that she would never kill him, and frankly, that encouraged her to definitely want to do it. After all, Sam was allegedly dead, as was everyone else who they replaced, and he was clearly stubborn. SHIELD always taught her to differentiate between a captive that would ultimately benefit their cause and one that would hinder it. This asshole was in the latter category. “You’re definitely an idiot if you think I won’t kill you,” she replied, snorting. “See, if you understood a little bit more about people, you would have been able to guess that.” As she spoke, she kicked each of his kneecaps, idly wondering whether his bones would break as easily as a humans. “Now that you can’t go anywhere, should I make it quick or more slow and painful?” Truthfully, she’d never had the stomach for torture, but he didn’t know that. Additionally, his body would be great for discovering more about the Skrulls, and that ensured a clean kill.
There was a reason that Xadre had begged the Queen for this assignment, and it wasn't because he had a desire to go running headfirst into an invasion, even if he was on the winning side. Unlike his mother and sister, Xadre had never been much of a fighter. He was a scientist, an innovator, an endlessly curious mind. The unfortunate side effect of that was his proclivity towards letting his guard down around test subjects. Morse was interesting as a representative of her species, but as she broke his bones easily and without hesitation despite their enhanced physiology, he realised that she was far from an ordinary human. Her training and abilities were above all of the others he had studied through his sister or Caden's notes. "The end result is the same, is it not?" Xadre asked. Even if he didn't die here tonight, even if he managed to get away, Veranke would surely have no mercy for him. He had exposed them to potential collapse, and for that, his mind knew, he would never be forgiven. "You will fall, just as I will," Xadre said finally, looking deep into Morse's eyes - the gaze of her lover, and therefore, as painful as he could make it, even if it was sickening to die in this form. "The difference is that your entire people will join you, whilst mine will reign supreme."
Despite the crappy circumstances, Bobbi had learned something important during her encounter with the Skrull. They were arrogant, they couldn’t realistically see potential for failure, and that was something they could exploit. When people relied solely on their ego, on plan A, they scrambled when things went wrong. She rolled her eyes as he continued rambling on and on, reminding her of HYDRA, whose collapse was imminent. One win didn’t ensure victory in a war, and none of her enemies seemed to realize that. “And you’ll never get to see it,” she relied, and then wrapped her hands around his neck, snapping it with some struggle. Another important lesson: their bones seemed to be stronger than a typical humans, and now with the Skrulls dead body, Bobbi would find out exactly how and exactly why. All it would take was a little research, and fuck, definitely getting it out of Sam’s body. God, that was disturbing. Her stomach lurched at the sight, but she suppressed the nausea, and grabbed her phone to call a Panel extraction team.
