Hi!!! First of all I wanted to say I really really adore your art the way you draw anatomy makes the flesh seem really squishable, I don’t have any other word to describe it, and the way you draw all those intricate bits so delicately is so amazing!!! I wanted to ask if you’re ok with people drawing your oc’s and sending it to you as fanart of them? (I promise I wouldn’t post the drawings anywhere I’d just send them to you in the ask box) If you’re not comfortable with that I’d perfectly understand!!! Have a wonderful day!!

PS: You didn't ask this one in particular, but just in case… If it's a piece that doesn't include interactions with others, everything should be fine so no need to check in advance. But with interactions with others (your oc's, even with my other oc's, etc.) it is not that I'm completely against it, but they are very very peculiar so I have my reservations about most of it… You can ask me to check.

How do you make the backgrounds of your illustrations? I would like to get some tips to learn how to make one.

I think is better if I explain my process a bit and you might get some tips from there.

Since I focus my work more on the character, I always decided the background after drawing the pose.

For the background sketch I use a technique called matte painting (basically a collage of photos and some paint over). But I try not to focus too much since later I will only use it to pick up colors, so it tends to be really messy, just so that I can get a general view of the atmosphere and sometimes the perspective.

I add a really rough sketch with the details around the characters. This also helps to better understand the perspective I need if point 2 didn't help much.

For the final work, since I use Clip Studio Paint, I like to use 3D objects that you can find on their assets website. (This part also helps with the perspective I talked about in point 3. You can just put a random object and adjust it until it looks natural and use it as a guide.) I like to adjust and blend different objects (for example: different hallways, one I use the ceiling and from the other the walls). Then I extract the lines from that object and adjust/add/… some lines here and there. Sometimes I don’t find what I want or it’s something with a specific design so you just have to draw it yourself, but I normally use them as guides.

The final touch that adds a lot to the final piece is adding details. I use the border effect a lot to add details to objects, and since most of my backgrounds are nature elements, a lot of it is just some leaves, sparkles and others brushes that give texture.

Here's an example. (It used to be green but after playing with some gradient maps I decided to make it purple... that's also a tip! Don't worry too much about about the color when drawing digitally, you can always change it)

Do you have any WIPs of under-drawing? I always want to go straight to the line art but that negatively impacts the form and anatomy; I'd love to see your sketching process!

Since I can’t see images in my head I need to see everything to understand what I’m doing. I always draw the whole pose even if I’m going to cover it with clothes or another part of the body.

I do also get a bit pissed off cause I “wasted” time in doing something I will cover later, but I also know if I don’t like the pose I won’t like it at the end, so that's even more of a waste of time...

what inspires your artwork?

Oh hard question. Nothing in particular, really…… 99％ of my drawings are parts of my oc stories. It can go from an important moment, or "one day when they were chilling on the grass" moment.

For example, I don't go to the beach, see something in particular, and get inspired to draw a mermaid in a certain situation. Instead, my brain one day wants to draw a mermaid, so I make a story for that mermaid and draw parts of it. And the inspiration for those stories mostly comes from random thoughts and objects/characteristics I want to add to the character.

Well…… maybe the first statement is a lie cause sometimes I look at other people's characters, and I am like, " Oh, I want to draw xx type of character too!". So that might be the root of inspiration, other artists' pretty characters lol

(I feel like other artists have much more meaningful answers to this question... I hope it is, somehow, a worthwhile responses. Thanks fro the question❤️‍🩹)

Can I ask what your merman's name / lore is.. and would it be okay to ever doodle any of your OCS..

Name is Cyren (not really a meaning behind it since most of the names from my ocs are not something I like to give importance to)

As for lore, still on a basic level but.... When he was a child precious stones and metals intrigued him. He once found one of those necklaces where you can put a picture of someone, and it became his favorite, because he found alluring the boy in that picture.

One day, in his first encounter with a human, it was stolen from him. And now as an adult,  he created a reputation for stealing all the jewelry from boats he encounters trying to find that necklace.
