Happy Mother’s Day! Jo Ann Cook and her ten-month-old daughter, Alison Jo, graced the cover of Erie Railroad Magazine in July 1957. Jo Ann’s father, Andrew Hohman, was employed at the Jamestown, New York, train station, a stop along the Erie’s main line from New York to Chicago, transporting both passengers and cargo. Thanks to a $4,000 Erie Railroad Scholarship, Jo Ann attended Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where she majored in psychology. She met her husband there, and after graduation the couple and their young daughter moved to North Carolina, where she attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned a master’s degree in social work. Inside the magazine, the article was headlined: “Erie Scholars Give Railroad Due Cause for Pride. Mother is Cum Laude Grad.” Today we celebrate and thank the mothers in our lives, including those who keep the railroad running. #mothersday #family #norfoksouthern
Many thanks to our Pocahontas Division for their recent $5,000 contribution to the Lynchburg City Schools Education Foundation (Lynchburg City Schools). Foundation funds are used to offer enhancing and enriching educational opportunities for all students. Contributions are used by the Foundation to fund programs that are not part of the school division's regular operating budget such as; Classroom Innovation Grants, the Tools4Schools Warehouse, annual scholar recognition, and student scholarships. Thoroughbred Pride giving back to their #community!
