I just went to a pumpkin patch (with my Michael sweater and listening to his theme) which made me think about normal au Michael and his family at the pumpkin patch…

normal au Michael is OBSESSED with halloween. he likes to feel in control of their halloween activities because he feels the rest of the family will “do it wrong”. Judith mocks his interest in it and calls it childish, but his mother indulges in it. Laurie complains that he’s too controlling but she has fun with him. I have no ideas for how to characterize his father at the moment, so…

picking out the pumpkins to carve is a rare bonding activity for the normal au Myers family. even Judith comes along, although only because she was allowed to invite her boyfriend. both parents come. it’s probably the happiest Michael ever is, short of actual halloween night, so their mother is more than happy to participate.

[WIP] normal AU

7:37 AM. It’s a Friday, which means only one more day of school before a precious two days of freedom. A little over 7 hours until Michael will have a temporary peace.

7 hours too many.

Judith has too many clothes, Michael observes as he seeks refuge in the back of his eldest sister’s closet. He never willingly enters her room, which makes it the optimal hiding spot. No one will look for him here. Coupled with the daily chaos of the mornings, the odds look good. So long as his mother doesn’t notice his absence before she leaves for work, his twenty-fourth attempt at skipping school will be a complete success.

He lets out a quiet sigh, and hopes his sisters will hurry up. The cheap perfume clinging to the clothes is giving him a headache.

His mother’s weary sigh travels up the staircase and through the tightly-shut closet door. Judith must be doing something again, Michael decides. Judith is always doing something. Always upsetting Mom, or picking on him, or starting fights with Dad, or making Laurie cry. Michael hates when people cry.

“Where’s—?” Damn it! His mother has realized she’s missing one-third of her children. Michael scoots further into the dark recesses of the closet. “Judith, go get your brother.”

“Laurie, go get your brother,” Judith orders shrilly, a clear mockery of their mother’s voice.

Though Michael can’t see her, he imagines Laurie’s face screwed up in displeasure. “I don’t know where he is!”

“Michael!” their mother calls, her voice so worn-out it almost guilts him into revealing his position.

Almost.

“Michael!” she tries again. Michael doesn’t move, doesn’t breathe. Footsteps up the stairs—damn it, damn it—and through the hallway to peek into his bedroom. “Michael?”

She won’t look in here, will she? Michael hopes the hanging clothes obscure him from sight, just in case.
